Fishing Report

Wow- nobody has posted here today. That's a first. There aren't many boats out, at least not this evening. I boated to Andy's and made the long drift twice, using the technique I mentioned the other day... a float and a red San Juan 8 feet deep (with a small #3 split shot). Drift the shallow side and tried to keep it fairly close to the bank without getting into the snags. I caught 3 rainbows right off the bat and then nothing till I hit the flats at the narrows- then 3 or 4 more. Not sure what's going on in the mid section but it's pretty quiet. Twitched to the opposite side and drifted the shallow bar to the end of the island, just above Fall Creek. Caught several on this short stretch.

I did throw an olive 1/8th oz jig and caught a couple but they didn't do that well.

Fished behind the mentioned or slew across from FC looking for bass or crappie... you never know! But only caught rainbows again. There were some gars porpoising up there.

They're still catching whites and walleye up at outlet #1. Had a couple come by and cleaned 2 whites and 2 walleye this evening.

Phil: Why are you fishing the San Juan worm off a float 8 feet and not the bottom drift that you have discussed in your articles. Also what prevents light bait like an egg and/or worm from floating up and pulling the barrell swivel up the reel line to the surface on the bottom drift rig?

Chad, I think it's because the gates are closed now, so the water has slowed down. It's just generators right now.

I attached a diagram of the rig Phil sent me. The rig doesn't slide. It's stationary and I think the momentum of the drift will keep it from floating too high. I think the above technique is basically the same set up as it you were fishing for bluebill w/ a bobber. The float is set about 8ft above your bait w/ a small shot to get it down.

I could be wrong or misunderstanding your questions. If so, Phil will clear it up.

I don't know... just wanted to do something different.

Babler loves the drift rig. I'm lazy and just pinch a split shot 18 inches above the lure/bait when I drift. Need to perform an experiment and see which catches fish best. The rig makes more sense thought- but I'm lazy, like I said.

The float- I didn't have a fly rod and wanted to see if I could fish with a float- so when I had my fly rod I could do the same thing. But read my report today... nothing worked very well- float or bottom bounce.

Hey Phil was by your place Thursday to pick up some jigs. Went fishing between Outlet 1 and the old boat ramp.Used a 1/8th oz. white jig with a 1/32 oz olive & brown 10" behind it on my ultralight.Bows and browns were hitting both.Could'nt seem to find any smallies or walleyes. Came back@ 5am Mon. morning to outlet 2 On the fly rod using your smallest o/b jig with a woven scud dropper I caught many bows & browns. Two browns were knocking at the 18' door.The bite quit at 8am and I went back to the ultralight and caught more in the deep fast water. Great to get back down. I'll drop by again next month when Im down. Keep those fishing reports up to date, it sure gives me a jump on what to expect.p.s. don't know what was hanging by outlet 2 but he broke my line twice with a killer strike . The fight was over before it began.
