Little confused on your instructions, I'm more of a visual person. Do you tie your v-rib in at the bend with the flashabou? Put a base of black down, then flashabou, then the v-rib and tie off? Or are you wrapping the flashabou over the v-rib? Sounds similar to a little unit that I tie.

Thanks

Pat

Pat,

Sorry for the confusion. I start the V-Rib just behind the bead with it laying on top of the hook shank. I wish I had a digital camera to show you better. The wrapped over V-rib gives it more of a side profile shape. After you wrap it back to the bend then do a half hitch and tie in your Flashaboo. Wrap the thread back to the bead and do another half-hitch or whip it behind the bead with just a couple of wraps.Wrap your Flashaboo up to the bead and tie off and then wrap your V-Rib and tie off, build your head and finish. The V-rib secures the Flashaboo so no need to start it(Flashaboo)behind the bead. Don't leave gaps between the V-Rib. The color really draws the fishes attention. It has just enough flash and doesn't run off wary fish.

I have caught scuds that were in my boot laces that looked very similar to these.

If you need more help let me know.

Congrats on the lunkers! How deep were you fishing the hybrids? Using an indicator?

DT,

I was fishing with a small Palsa stick on floating indicator. I was fishing just where the fly would tick bottom once in a while. I was even using 5x flouro all day. Who knows, I may have even caught more fish if I used 6x.

Take care,

Wow, I didn't know you could catch them on a 5x! Good to hear, I guess the stained water helps some. It must be you tie excellent flies, they don't care what size tippet you are using. :D

DT,

My flys aren't nothing to write home about trust me. But, they get the job done most of the time.

Duuugh, that makes sense, using the V rib to make a better/taller profile! Thanks for the info, will try to put a couple together tonight. Have you ever filled the hollow v rib with oil? I've read that it gives it a very distinct color. Have not tried it but may have to.

If you have not drifted this little jewel below the arch bridge at BSSP you might try. When the water was down, before the great flood, I was on the North side slinging a black and white ribbed zebra midge down through the riffles. Found a break on the south side where the gravel bar dropped off into the deeper water. The fish were hanging on the bar waiting for food to come buy in the faster water. Did really good there.

Ahhh, those were the days.

Thanks again!!

Just tied one of those bad boys. OMG, they are gorgeous. That flashabou just jumps out of that V Rib. I covered it with Sally Hansen and it shines like a diamond in a goats a#$!

And I just realized that V Rib isn't hollow, but one of the other types is!

thanks for the recipe.

Pat,

I'm glad you liked the pattern. You are welcome and I hope you have as much luck as I've had with it so far. It really amazes me how much the green shows through the olive color. When the sun is shining it really gets a lot of attention. I fish below the bridge a ton as long as there is room to fish. It seems as if the word got out about how many fish were there that you couldn't see and then it is always crowded. I've sat in one spot and caught 25 fish before. I'm interested to see what the high water did to the fish that used to hang out there.

I'll catch up with you someday soon at Bennett I'm sure.

Rich ... thanks for sharing. Something else to add to the arsenal. Below the bridge is one of my favorite spots in the park .... I guess everybody elses too. Very similar experiences to you and Pat. I've had some fast action in that area on red zebras, rust zebras, olive scuds, and copper brassies (every cast kind of action). Mike
