SKMO Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Math is not one of my strong points, hell lets be honest here, there are days its not even a medium point, but if I am thinking correctly, for every 7 or 8 cents in sales tax you pay if you buy in MO, the MDC will get one penny. Thats not quite right, that would indicate MDC got 1/8 of all tax monies. One way to look at it is for every dollar you spend that is taxed they get 1/8 cent, (or for every $8 you spend they get a penny). chub minnow Posted May 23, 2008 Posted May 23, 2008 Were you on the Elk or Big Sugar when he stopped you? I'm sure glad to see that they are out there. Hopefully they'll show a presence on Indian and the Sugars this weekend to help discourage poaching and general chicanery.

Wouldn't 1/8 of 8 dollars be $1? Also in your example above, I don't believe it is derived from the cost of the product purchased but, from the amount of tax charged. So if I spent $100 and the tax was $10 that would make the total $110 but they only get 1/8 of the $10 charged in tax. That is my understanding. Al Agnew Posted May 24, 2008 Posted May 24, 2008 Nope, can't figure it that way. I don't know exactly what all the state and county and municipal sales taxes add up to as a percentage of sales. It varies from place to place in MO. But, no matter how many pennies you pay per dollar you spend, only 1/8 of a penny goes to MDC (1/8 of one percent sales tax). So if you bought something for $10, you paid 1 and 1/4 pennies to MDC. Or, if you bought something for $100, 12.5 cents of your sales tax on it goes to MDC (1% of $100 is $1, 1/8th of a dollar is 12.5 cents).

If 1/8th of a dollar is 12.5 cents and if I bought something and the tax portion of my purchase came to $10 wouldn't that = $1.25 for the MDC and not 1.25 cents? But I still say it is not the total cost of the product purchased, just the tax portion that the 1/8 comes from. I don't know.... I have been sitting here playing with this on a calculator and don't like what it is saying either....
