focused fishing Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Whack'em, I feel your pain on the ski boats / jet skis / cruiser situation. Was guiding on Sat. morning, on a point up the James when a wakeboard boat (big chrome tower, loud music and graphics on the side) drug his wake boarder within 20' of my boat. My clients, a couple of great guys from OK, started yelling at the 40 something guy running the boat when they made their second pass. He shut down within talking distance and my client proceeded to have it out with the guy and the guy's little kids (under 10). Not wanting to make a bad situation worse I told the guys we'd move and go fish somewhere else, about that time johnny wakeboard dropped a couple of "F-Bombs" my way and told me he was on vacation and not going to let some "F-ing" fishermen ruin his day. I looked over at him, his wife and two little kids plus the one at the end of the rope and told him he didn't need my help, he was doing enough to ruin his own vacation. About this time the guy fired up the boat and started pulling his boy down the lake and ran smack into a big floating stump and bent his prop. ozarksfishin Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 thanks Whackem, right now is the time to get out and learn that drop shot, they are really eating it good. Get out on those points in 25-30ft. and they are there! OAF Contributor Phillip Stone http://ozarksfishin.com

Whack'emGood Posted June 9, 2008 Author Posted June 9, 2008 Justice is served... in the form of a ruined vacation and a new prop costing hundreds of dollars!!!!! Way to handle it professionally Eric. It is they that are the uncivil and unruly. Us fisherman are just out trying to have some good clean fun and not bother anyone. Would like to give'em a whoopin and take out some frustration on their heads... but I guess a guy just can't (shouldn't) do that. Whack'emGood Posted June 9, 2008 Author Posted June 9, 2008 Mr Stone, Yeah, I would like to learn to drop shot for sure. If I could afford it, I would book a guided trip tomorrow. I have a question/concern about it though... I have a Humminbird 585c with a trolling motor mounted 'ducer. Is that unit good enough or capable of seeing the action? If so, how should the settings be set up in order to do it... generally. I have heard alot about the Lowrance units-- and, if I had one of those, I could review the forum and probably would be able to set it up pretty good I think... but have not heard much about the Humminbirds. Any suggestions/tips would be much appreciated. Anyone have a Humminbird 585 or similar unit that they use for shotting? Also, do you have to be able to see them to make it work, or could I just go out there on a point and drop it down and try to get bit? I would like to think I am a pretty fair fisherman, but I am a total novice with the drop shot. ozarksfishin Posted June 9, 2008 Posted June 9, 2008 Whackem, the newer units can all be used to see the drop shot, with a little fine tuning. I am not as experienced on the Humminbirds, I have always had Lowrance. What I do is set the ping speed as high as it will go and the chart speed as high as it will go. This gives you a much better "real time" picture. Don House has a wealth of info on the Humminbirds and I know he would be able to tell how to set it up. He will chime in when he gets off the lake and reads this!! Help us out Big Don! As for being able to see the fish on your unit, it is extremely important. Alot of times you can see a fish come up and look at your drop shot and then go back down, sometimes you can follow the fish down and he will come back and eat it! And I like to see what depth the fish are holding so I can work the drop shot just above them, if not you may be working it just below the fish if you can't see them on the screen. Fishing Buddy Don House Posted June 9, 2008 Fishing Buddy Posted June 9, 2008 Humminbird, I don't know nothing about no Stinking Humminbirds... Ok here we go, First only really two things I need to do on these, 1) Set your Sensitivity up, the factory setting is 80% play with this.. When I drop shot, I set mine to 90% in open water, lower when I on a bridge pillar or dock.. Play with it to find the best setting and it will change.. 2) Set your lower limits. This setting is two settings below as the sensitivity setting, If I'm marking fish on the bottom at 32 feet then I set it for 32 feet. If the fish are suspended in say 35 feet and the boat is in 100 feet, I will set this to 40 feet and not worry about what is below that. The closer you set the the lower limits to where the fish are the better you will see your rig going down.. You should see three lines going down the graph, 1) Swivel at the top, 2) Hook and Worm in the Middle, 3) Weight on the bottom. When you find a fish line then drop this down to where the 2) Line is right at the fish line, now that bait is right in the fish view or even right in his face.. Hang on.. 3) Finding the sweet spot. If your transducer is mounted on your trolling motor then there is a sweet spot on it, this is where when you drop your rig down in the right spot you should see the rig go down the screen with no problems, all graphs have this, I have found that if I take my rig on both sides of the trolling motor and release it just ahead of the trolling motor I have no problems seeing everything, this is something you will need to play with to find the best spot on your unit. Play with these 3 things and the drop shot will come to life for you, if you have any questions or something is not working drop me an email or give me a call, love to help you out.. By the way we fished Saturday and Sunday and had the same results with fish and the jerks in the big boats, some of these guys are unreal and just plan old rude, we had two passes on Sunday that were close to 20 feet with a wake boarder, so close as to wash water over the nose of my big boat.. Whack'emGood Posted June 9, 2008 Author Posted June 9, 2008 Thanks Mr. Stone. I greatly appreciate your time and expertise. Like I was saying, I would love to be able to afford to hire one of you great guides--- but, hopefully, with this information I can figure it out enough to start catching a few. I would like to get started and then, when I can afford to do a guided trip or two, I can learn the fine points and get more tuned in to it. Yes, hopefully Mr. House will give me a few Humminbird-specific tips. That would be great. You guys are great... keep up the good work. Whack'emGood Posted June 9, 2008 Author Posted June 9, 2008 Awesome info Mr. House!!! I was posting and you had already replied... This is all amazing (FREE... don't anyone here ever forget this... what great guys these guides are) information. I can't wait to go out and give it a shot. I will try not to bother you, unless I have serious problems with it, but I really appreciate the offer for further help considering how busy you are (thats a good thing) with your paying clients. Now, correct me if I'm wrong-- but these 3 things are in addition to cranking up the ping speed and chart speed... correct?
