Don Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 My oldest, my youngest and I set up camp yesterday evening. My youngest, Sara, is 11 years old and she decided to flyfish for the first time today. She practiced casting for awhile, hooking two on midges but losing both. After awhile I located alot of trout far from the bank and I had to cast for her. I hooked 3 on a brown pine squirrel and she played and landed each one successfully. She brimmed with excitement the rest of the day and called and told her friend about it as soon as we got home. She asked me about getting her a tackle box for her next trip and I showed her a chest pack she would use. She adjusted all the straps to fit her frame and wore it around the house for awhile saying how cool it was. She was even more excited when I told her I would fix up a box of flies for her to have and use. She said she is ready to wade at Taney when I ever get to go. I'm just as excited. Don May I caught you a delicious bass.

flyfshn Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 SWEET!! That is a blast.....I take my youngest, Amanda (13) and she really enjoys it!! Her sister Megan (16) does too, when she is not doing something with her friends! Next time you are near wally world in Branson, stop in there and check out the fly rods they sell. They sell a Scientific Anglers rod for approx $20 and believe it or not, they are a really nice rod! I bought one a year ago for the girls and they really like them. Tons of fun when you have fishing partners like that! Fish On! Mike Utt “Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery. On The Fly 6 Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Awesome! Gotta get them started early! Plus..if they stick with it, buying for Birthdays just got that much easier! Trav Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 My kids were vitually burned out with fishing. They are 16 and 18 and love it, but they have been fishing so many times with me it is like eating dinner. They would rather hang with thier friends. Might be a side effect of growing up on the lake though. You tell me...... "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
brittsnbirds Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 Don- The best thing is the excuse. "Honey, the daughter and I need some quality time together.......". It use to work for me, now the son is in Idaho and his buddy is in helicopter flight school with the Army. I guess I need to adopt a new one!! Pat
Murdoc Posted June 18, 2008 Posted June 18, 2008 I've got three girls 6, 8 and 10 and they love trout fishing!! They are bugging me everyday to go!! And the "quaility time" works everytime with my wife! The first time I took them all at once was 2 years ago and I thought I might as well leave my rod in the truck but did they supprise me!!! They fished right with me and I told them that if they were fishing and I caught one they could could reel it in. They never stopped fishing. It was a good day and each got to reel in at least 5 fish each. I would say "who's next" and they kept track of who was next. Later in the day I said "who's next"? and a deep voice from the opposite direction said "ME"!! I turnd to see an older gentleman standing there with his hand up!! We got a good laugh from that and I gave him a couple flys to use. All good day!!! Smiles are free http://rdpflyrods.com/
Fly_Guy Posted June 20, 2008 Posted June 20, 2008 Isn't it amazing to see a kid get 'hooked'? We took our five year old nephew for the first time a month ago. He kept getting hung up on the bottom, so when he starting yelling "I got one!!", we were skeptical at first - but he caught a trout completely by himself (we helped with a few others). He talked of nothing else for a solid two weeks. He'll be a great fisherman - he reeled in three, but by the time we were driving home, he had caught four. When we was telling his dad later that night, he had caught twenty! Amazing - he's learning real fast!
