flyfishmaster Posted June 24, 2008 Posted June 24, 2008 BKB, Great report. You are right about down stream from Tan Vat, there are about 5 or 6 spots that will hold fish consistantly, otherwise there is a lot of walking. Also good job with the nymphs. Most people like to fish the upper Current with streamer like patterns, but I think in the low clear water the smaller nymphs are the ticket all day long. Was there a Trico hatch in the early morning? Now for that "big brown"... he was there a few weeks ago as well in the Rock Garden, plus there was a second monster up stream. Those big guys are hard to convince to take a size 20 nymph when they can eat a 10" bow instead. The big brown that I use as my avatar photo was catch last year on the Current about 1/2 mile below Tan Vat and it was catch on a size 18 Mercury Black Hares Ear. I just think the fish happend to open it's mouth at the wrong time and the fly got sucked in. Other wise that beast was not moving for any other fly I was throwing at it. Anyway good job and see you on the river. Later, FFM Woo Hoo Fish On!!
Members BKB Posted June 24, 2008 Author Members Posted June 24, 2008 There was no visible hatch of any kind either day that I was on the river...granted, I was there during the afternoon. That is a very nice brown flyfishmaster, especially taken out of the water where it came from! The one that I saw looked in the water to be of similar size. It was hanging out with about an 18" or so rainbow! Seems like I will have to practice my streamer patterns to go after the big browns...new to flyfishing and have never tried it!
Members Trout Dawg Posted June 24, 2008 Members Posted June 24, 2008 Fished Current from Tan Vat to Baptist Saturday June 21st Water was great but I had no fish on the end of my line. Saw a real nice brown. Buddy I was fishing with, pickedup a few Rainbows. Sunday June 22nd A hugh hatch of midge (Cream or White) in the morning at the Tan Vat access. fished a small dry midge and landed 2 small Browns. A little Caddis dry got me two or three more. Black and silver Zebra midge all of 4 inched under an indicator produced several more. A tan with Char. neck, black bead and wire took a couple as well. All browns all in the 6 to 8 inch range. Had a blast all right at the Tan Vat access. Fair Winds and Following Seas Kevin
Kayser Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 Trout Dawg- were those maybe tricos? They come in huge clouds in the mornings on the River and most of the smaller-mid size fish will be rising to them as they fall. They are tiny, tiny mayflies that will fly for a while and then drop a foot or two if you watch close enough. Most of them are gone by 10am or so. Rob WARNING!! Comments to be interpreted at own risk. Time spent fishing is never wasted.
flyfishmaster Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 kayser, When I was down a few weeks ago, the Trico hatch was non-existent. I was bummin'. Sam Potter just posted on his site as of June 24, all hatches are down, especially the Trico. Later, FFM Woo Hoo Fish On!!
3wt Posted June 25, 2008 Posted June 25, 2008 There were both Tricos and midges on the 21st - upstream from Baptist. The midges were too small to even think about imitating, and the tricos were not in the normal numbers. No real fish keying in on them. The other mornings last week there were only a few random tricos in the fly water at Montauk. No fish coming up at all. I think they need more vegetation for the nymphs to cling to than there is right now. It's pretty clean since the floods.
