Murdoc Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 Fly-Guy, In the fly area you don't have to use a fly rod only. It's set up for using only fly types for bait. No soft plastics. No treble hooks. That's why Tim changes the Cleo to a single hook. I Love the fly area!!! Smiles are free http://rdpflyrods.com/
Fly_Guy Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 thanks murdoc - just out of curiosity - is it "frowned upon" by the more "serious" fishermen to using spinning gear in the fly area? I know some fishermen have certain standards (like only using flies with a fly rod). Do folks at RR have similar convictions? I'm just curious about the other forum members - as for me, I see nothing wrong with using spinning gear/flies. Any purists fishing RR?
Murdoc Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 I don't frown on anyone if they are fishing legally no matter what they are fishing with. I don't see much frowning at all in the park. I use a spin cast if the water is real high sometimes. I have seen it and heard it at Bennett before. Smiles are free http://rdpflyrods.com/
chub minnow Posted July 2, 2008 Posted July 2, 2008 I agree with Murdoc - Don't see much frowning at the park So long as no one is using bait or powerbait, I don' think anyone will question what you are doing.
Steve Smith Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 I agree 100% with Murdoc. I don't think the fly fishers frown on spinning rods in the fly only zone as long as it's done legally. In my case, illegal baiters drive me crazy along with people who can't read signs clearly posted along the river like "no wading", "no fishing on this bank", etc. There are lots of people with flyrods that can be just a rude and overbearing. ___________________________ AKA Flysmith - Cassville MO

As with the comments above (but with a little less politeness): If someone seriously has an attitude about me using another type of rod in the fly area I always go back to my tracker and get out my cane pole with fishing line tied on it and fish with that! You should see the looks on their faces... I have called down fly fisherman for telling an angler that zone one was for Fly Rod's only (he even said"And NO fishing from the bank, either!") Shame on you for being so high faluting in a sport meant for relaxation and enjoyment! That's why they are called State Parks! But I would be happy to debate it with less venom in my tone if someone wishes I suppose... I am also an advocate of catch and release that does eat fish on occasion.. So does that mean I am confused? cricket.c21.com
Murdoc Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 The other day this subject came up with one of my friends and the best way we could put our finger on fly fishermen was that for the purist of fly fishermen it's a "gentleman's sport". The true fly fisherman that I've had the pleasure of meeting are the ones that love to tell you how many fish they have caught and then show you exactly what and how they are fishing and even give you a couple flys that they have tied. I used to guide on Table Rock and it gave me more pleasure to see someone catch fish and have a wonderful day than anything that I've ever done. Most of the guys on this forum are a perfect example. FishinCricket Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 is that the requirement for the fly area - a lure with some kind of feather on it? - Would a tiny crankbait with a dressed tail work as well? - Also (always wondered) do you have to use a fly rod in the zone? Are roaring river's requirements and zones different than Bennett? In the Fly zone at Bennett you just have to put on a single hook, the feather isn't necessary (though in all honesty a feather would work well with the action of these spoon lures).... So I know the feather isn't necessary in the fly zone at Bennett, but I am not sure about roaring river... cricket.c21.com

I'll agree with that - at taneycomo I'll always give out flies - until I run out that is. Of course, that's the beauty of tying your own - you can give out a lot of flies and not be out much but some time. A gent give me a fly at RR once as well - I was grateful, even though I couldn't catch a cold with it
