drew03cmc Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 Has anyone cast or fished the Echo Classic rods, specifically the 9' 5wt. I am looking for a 5wt combo, (rod/reel/line) and was wondering what you thought the best deal going was for less than $300 total ,along with where to buy. I would like a reel with a great drag on it as I will target carp as well as bass and gills with this setup, along with trout when the time comes. If we did one of the Ross Worldwide reels, I would wonder how they would hold up to a 20# carp running with my Clouser, but I would imagine if it does fail, they fix or replace it for a nominal fee anyway...Hmm...Help me out here guys! Andy

Drew I would consider the TFO TiCr or a Sage Launch. I would think you could get the combo for the price you quoted. I have also found that the Okuma Integrity mid arbor reels are a great value for the money. You can google them or find them on ebay all the time. I have a 7/8 wt integrity that has a very nice drag and is sturdy as they come. Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"

Albright is having a great rod sale until July 4 on the A5 rods, I didn't need another rod but for $120 with tube and sock and shipped to my front door I couldn't pass it up. You even get a $35 tackle bag free with it.. With that said you have $180 left to spend on a reel and line... http://albrighttackle.com/a5.htm Here's a link to show you how the Albright A5 rod did in the shoot out with all the heavy hitters in the business on the list... http://www.yellowstoneangler.com/FlyRodCom...nrodtesting.asp I was born at night, but not last night. Flysmallie Posted July 3, 2008 Posted July 3, 2008 I bought a 3wt Echo Classic a few months ago. Put a Ross Flystart on it and then spent the bucks on Rio line. I've only used it a few times but I love it. It was within your price range, I think I spent around $280. The only place to buy it though is Backcountry Outfitters. I get BCO rewards points for saying that. Michael says that when I get 10,000 points he will give me a new leader. Can't wait for that. Hi Michael, haven't seen you in a while. Hope everything is going great. I think you still owe me a fishing trip.
Greg Posted July 4, 2008 Posted July 4, 2008 Some great rods in the under $200 range (IMO) are the Sage Launch, TFO professional, TFO signature series. I've not ever cast an echo but I hear they are a really nice rod. I think the best reel going at a decent price is the Teton Tioga. Costs $100 to $150 and seems almost indestructible with a great drag. I've got 2 and they are my favorite reels even though I have some pricier brands/models. Lamson has a really nice new reel in that price range too. Like someone else said if you are anywhere near Springfield MO - Michael at BCO gives great advice and has all the major brands. I think you still owe me a fishing trip. Wait a minute! I also have a BCO card and I was told that if I earned 15,000 points I get my choice of a pack of crystal flash or flashabou. I think you've been shafted Ronnie I picked up my first Echo rod from BCO in May. I'ts not a classic. It's a 7 wt for my sink tip reel. I bought it based on price, reputation, and warranty. I can't wait for the initiation. I've yet to try it. Don Don May I caught you a delicious bass.
Terry Beeson Posted July 4, 2008 Posted July 4, 2008 All I got for 50,000 points was a free cup of coffee... And he switched the music over to Big Smith.... Of course when he's not there I do better. I got a free Respoolin' magazine for only 1,000 points!!! drew03cmc Posted July 4, 2008 Author Posted July 4, 2008 Well, if funds come through, it might end up being a Echo 2 instead of Classic, but never know! Andy
Members BrowningFisherman Posted July 4, 2008 Members Posted July 4, 2008 Echo's are nice rods I had a guy pushing me hard to buy one and it was tought to resist. For the reel I am a new found firm believer in Lamson. Lamson is one of very few reels that is made in america and has a lifetime warranty. Their new reel the Konic has the same drag as their high end reels except its only $120-$140. It weighs like 4.5 oz or something crazy like that, its is basicly scratch resistant and failure resistant. If you want a drag that can hold a 20lb carp this is the one you want.
drew03cmc Posted July 8, 2008 Author Posted July 8, 2008 Thanks guys! I will need to grab a 9' 5wt here before too long, and will look towards Echo or Albright if they have another sale as I did not have the funds for the A5 then...darnit! Andy
