superfly Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 I took my wife floating a few weeks ago from Greer to Whitten. It was a Saturday and a lot of canoes on the river. When I saw a fishermen I asked them how the fishing was. They all said good but one guy said he got a ticket. He was in the blue ribbon section using soft plastics with his wife. That is a No No! Hats off to the law enforcement on the river. It pays to know the rules! Superfly
Members smbass43 Posted July 8, 2008 Members Posted July 8, 2008 Superfly, Thanks for the info. Just curious, do you know how much the ticket was for? Also, I heard that some of the agents will take your gear away. Anyone know if that is true. Nonetheless, good rule for managing that stretch of river.
superfly Posted July 8, 2008 Author Posted July 8, 2008 I did not ask how much ticket was. The guy was for sure bummed out! I saw the sherrifs dept out on that part of the river that day. I wonder if they gave the ticket.
jdmidwest Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 Sheriffs dept writes tickets for the rowdiness, drugs, or minors with alcohol. MDC writes tickets for game violations or anything that the Sheriffs dept does not catch. Both are usually on the river on the weekends during peak float season. Since the NPS started the no tolerance rule with all the crazy's, the Sheriff is probably making a killing. 11pt has always been a calmer river compared to the Current or the Jack's Fork. Turner to Riverton or Whitten to Riverton usually gets most of the party floaters. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
Brian Sloss Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 County guys can and have written game violations on the river and so can the forest service guys. We are not part of the NPS but rather USGS forest service, so the new Current river and Jack's Fork rules (ie Mardi Gras beads, etc) don't apply. If we start seeing those kinds of crowds coming down here in large numbers, I would not be surprised if they are adopted. www.elevenpointflyfishing.com www.elevenpointcottages.com (417)270-2497
Members smbass43 Posted July 9, 2008 Members Posted July 9, 2008 Man...I hope that never happens on this river. That's one of the reasons why we go down to the 11pt every year...stay away from the party barges. This year was the first year we have run into a large loud group of partiers on the river and I hope that is not a sign of things to come.
RiverRunner Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 I echo the same sentiments, I guess we are lucky down here in AR that there are no outfitters on the river anymore and that the Spring River is so close for the party crowd.
Brian Sloss Posted July 9, 2008 Posted July 9, 2008 We have seen no noticeable increase in the party crowds since the new rules went into place on the Current. We are too far from St. Louis and Memphis. www.elevenpointflyfishing.com www.elevenpointcottages.com (417)270-2497
snap Posted July 10, 2008 Posted July 10, 2008 Have camped many days and nites on the 11 point over the last 10 years....on occasion, you will have a rowdy group come down the river. For the most part, IMO, and from what I hear by talking to people on the river, those who float this river do it for what it is!!! I also think they pass too many party spots(current, huzzah,) to get there so the partiers don't see a need to travel so far too party. Recently spent a couple of nites camped up river from Whiten. While at Whiten, heard from an oldtimer that a couple of big fish (8 lbs) were caught the week before the 4th of july.
