I am planning on being down on the lake the last few days in October. What type of baits should I stock up on? I know this is an open ended question especially with the amount of water the lake has had this year. I am just on a budget and want to plan wisely. Any help would be much appriciated. Good fishing to you all and see you in the Fall.

Dave, I would stock up on All White or all Chartruese 1/2 ounce and 3/4 ounce jigging spoons. I used these called Hawg Jaw Spoons You can get them at the Ozark Bait and Tackle in Kimberling City. Also I would have some 3/4 ounce PB&J Football Jigs handy, just in case!!! But really at that time of year they are schooled up pretty good and eating that spoon really good by then. Those two baits would cover you for suspened or on the bottom fish!!

Good Fishing

Are most people fishing Jewel football jigs in 1/2 and 5/8 and can I place orders over the phone for the jigging spoons? I see that they do not have a website. I saw last year guys were throwing some warts as well. Should I stock a few of them too?

What type of jigging spoon is the most popular? Do they need to be hammered?

Dwiebenga, no they do not need to be hammered, I use some called the hawg jaw spoon, in 1/2 on 3/4 ounce all White or All Chartreuse.. I get them at Ozark Bait and Tackle in Kimberling City, Jerry Sniders Place.. Never really had good luck with all Silver, but do still use them.. Also for a added kick, go buy some trailer treble hooks with feathers attached, remove stock hook and replace with these, gives the spoon alot of added flash!

As far as the wiggle warts, you might want to get a couple but, don't go crazy :)

Good Fishing

Don knows his stuff.

In case you want a more complete explanation, go to the free style jigging article at the Bass Pro site. Use jigging spoon as the search and look at the articles that pop up with the products. Ignore the fact the are trying to sell you another kind of rod and look at the spoons in the article. One (looks like a Hopkins or Cotton Cordell) has a feathered tail, and the others are not silver but light colored. I've never fished the actual free style jig spoon, but I have used the method for white bass, stripers, and largemouth. I have read in more than one article and message on the boards that the method also works for walleye.
