taxidermist Posted August 9, 2008 Posted August 9, 2008 Well today I am trying the Alltel, usb card internet for two weeks. it sure seems faster for down loads, have not tried to up load anything yet. But its way to heck better than Dial up and cheaper than Hughs or Wildblue. Plus the usb card can be swithed between computers I am told. Ours in on the newer gateway PC. But its pretty darn fast. Members catfish Posted August 10, 2008 Members Posted August 10, 2008 keep us posted on how the Alltel, usb card internet works out. We are also looking for something faster than dial up and that won't completely break the bank. We get good alltel cell service here accept in the house. Ever since the wife up graded to the little bitty digital phones, you have to go outside the house most of the time to successfully use them. Anyway anxious to hear how it does.
Bman Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 AT&T and Verison have wireless aircards that work with a high speed usb port as found on newer computers. The service is $59.00 per month. They connect to the new high speed 3G networks. If you are near major highways or cities, you can probably connect. Check the websites for coverage maps. I use the AT&T wireless usb aircard and love the high speed connection. I just speed tested and the results are, 1711 K download, and a 362 K upload. The only good line is a tight line
jdmidwest Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 Sounds great, I am stuck in dial up hell here myself. I tried a AT&T wireless usb and could not get a signal here at the house. Blackberry gets about 1 bar here. Curious about the price with Alltel, the others ran about $70-$80 for a data package. Bman Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 If you have trouble with signal strength, you can purchase a directional antenna and amplifier= about $300 bucks Check out http://www.unwiredsignal.com/ They can help with cell phone signal at your home or car also. The wireless services I mentioned are for unlimited serv. Some of the satelite services are limited on downloads. The only good line is a tight line
jdmidwest Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 If I have to spend that kind of money I would go with the satellite. The burn is here, I have been waiting 10 years for SBC ATT to upgrade the last station next to the house so I can have DSL. They have it within 4 miles now, they just have to install the equipment in the next station less than 1 mile away. taxidermist Posted August 11, 2008 Author Posted August 11, 2008 We have DSL about 1/2 mile from the house and the phone company says we are screwed. Alltel is $59.00 a month and I used it last night and it worked great with 2 bars on the USB card. Alltel has a 15 day free trial and you can get $100.00 rebate on the card, it cost $100.00 so its free after the rebate. I uploaded pics to photobucket in seconds instead of 10-15 minutes. same for down loads. It is as fast as any DSL I have used. Tomorrow I will try to find a speed tester to see. We dont have great reception here but its better than dialup way better, my wife teaches school and there is a site she teaches from and the usb card will access the NOVANET. Hey its great and we don't loose service like we do with the Dishnetwork Sat. 15 day free trail!!
bobber Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 i have alltel ... one in a lap top, and in my phone it's a flat fee... the next best is wifi <*)))))))>< * AMERICAN CANOE ASSOCIATION CERTIFIED CANOE, and SWIFT WATER RESCUE INSTRUCTOR.*
taxidermist Posted September 13, 2008 Author Posted September 13, 2008 Well after these few weeks I am pretty happy with the Alltel card. its about as fast as DSL. I dont loose service when the cloud cover is heavy, not big issues. Nothing I had to call IT about. Someday when I get a laptop I like the idea of being able to take it with me anywhere and have service.
