Forsythian Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 A year or so ago I upgraded from an aluminum canoe to an Old Town Discovery 169. I really like the boat, and I anticipate many happy years with it. Day trips mostly, 1 or 2 overnighters a year. Flat water and Ozark streams. BUT You know how it goes... a guy at work has an Appalachian that he bought new a year or two ago, and now he's a very motivated seller. The grass is always greener, no? So, I'm looking for opinions on the merits of trading up, and also what the Appalachian might be worth (used maybe 10 times). thanks! Cenosillicaphobiac
Gavin Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 The Appalachian is a nice boat..its made of royalex so its almost 20lbs lighter than the Disco 169..a bit shorter and a bit narrower with more volume in the ends. Probably less initial stability, but more secondary stability, and it will turn quicker because it has a bit more rocker. It also comes with better seats..Its a definite upgrade over the Disco, but they are both good boats. Half of retail would be a good place to open the bidding. Good luck.
bobber Posted August 13, 2008 Posted August 13, 2008 the applalachian is the only canoe from old town rated for classIII water tandem or solo a good value is around $700.. list price is like $1385 plus tax and shipping.... Forsythian Posted August 13, 2008 Author Posted August 13, 2008 Thanks guys... I'm not sure if I'm gonna make an offer or not. I just plunked down some dough on a 3wt combo, and I'm a little cash poor. Still, I bet I could get it for $600... maybe even $500. If I could get $350 or $400 for my Disco, that'd be a pretty affordable upgrade! Cenosillicaphobiac
