Brian Wise Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Hey guys, The family and I ran down to Dry Run today. It was my 3 year olds first trip down there and he had a blast. He was fly fishing and did really well landing his first fish on the fly rod, a tiny rainbow. His attention didn't last very long so it turns out the playground at Quarry Park is in a perfect spot! My 5 year old has been down before and already had, well, several fish under his belt on the fly rod. This trip was completely different, on the way down I explained to him that he was pretty much on his own. He did spectacular, I couldn't believe it. He has been casting for a while now (since he was 3) so that isn't that much of a problem, except for the roll cast. Mending was a different story so that is where I had to help him a bit. BUT he casted, mended, set, and fought his first fish ever completely by himself....I am a 'touch' proud. After mending good a few times and not so good a few times I help him once and saw the indicator pause half way through the mend....we set and it was ON! I let go, shot some video and watched my 5 YEAR OLD land this fish. He was sporting the Buff today as well...."ganster style" Releasing his first brown.... Brian My Youtube Channel
flyfishmaster Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 Brian, What a great trip that had to have been... I cannot wait until my 2 little girls are able to cast and take them down there for some fun on the "Kid's Dream Stream". later, FFM Woo Hoo Fish On!!
Members Aaron Mills Posted August 11, 2008 Members Posted August 11, 2008 HeHe, that bow is bigger than he is!!! I can't wait till my little guy is big enough to head down to Dry Run. Looks like you had quite the day, Brian. I've got some friends coming in Thurs. - Tuesday. We'll be at Norfork Dam (if the water is low) and if not putting the boat in at Rim Shoals and island hopping. We probably will fish at least one night at the dam if they turn Norfork off. You're more than welcome if you can get away. Aaron
Terry Beeson Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 I may sound like a broken record, but I don't care... There ain't NUTHIN'.... I mean NUTHIN' like seeing the face of a youngster pulling one of those hawgs out of DRC. If you get the chance, take your kids to the Youth Conclave at Mountain Home October 4th. Even if you don't have kids, volunteer to help with the Youth Conclave... It is an experience you will talk about for years... Nice trip, Brian... OKFlyFisher44 Posted August 11, 2008 Posted August 11, 2008 I took my nephew down there a few weeks ago...the place is absolutely amazing and its a beautiful little stream. I had a lot of fun playing "guide" for him. Big fish everywhere!! He could hardly stand still to cast... We didn't get to catch any of the HUGE fish...but he landed several nice fish in the 17-19" range so he was excited. We did "roll" a huge 'bow. I seen it eat his san juan worm and he set the hook...only to see the fish roll over and turn his head to run. Hook pulled out immediately...major bummer! Chance ...I'm haunted in my dreams of waters I have yet to fish and trout I have yet to catch... Chasing the Dream...

Flysmallie Posted August 12, 2008 Posted August 12, 2008 I have to say I'm a little jealous that your 5 year old can cats better than me!!! I really need to get my daughters down there. How far of a drive is it from Springfield?
Brian Wise Posted August 12, 2008 Author Posted August 12, 2008 Yeah Terry, you can sure tell her photos compared to mine! Flysmallie, Dry Run would be a little over 2 hours from Springfield I believe. It is an awesome little creek--and beautiful to boot! Brian My Youtube Channel
