woodman Posted August 18, 2008 Posted August 18, 2008 I can't find the plastic minnow traps any more all you see is wire. Back in the old days 60's we used glass ,mom still has her dads glass trap. Used many times on the elk river. I don't understand why the plastic traps have disapeared. We always bated with saltine crackers and the traps would be black with shiners. Excelent catfifish bait. How do these wire traps work on the ripples in the clear streams and what is used for bait? http://s147.photobucket.com/albums/r302/scrawford_photos/

jdmidwest Posted August 19, 2008 Posted August 19, 2008 Glass traps can still be found for about $30 in places. If you find a gallon glass jug that a mason canning ring will fit, use a mason ring and a piece of screen wire for a funnel and make one. Usually can find the glass jars in pickle isle in restaurant food sizes. You may have to eat a few pickles. I have used a quart jar in the past on float trips. Now days, glass is forbidden in most river, check local regs. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson

bclift65706 Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 I dont know how they work in very fast water bot in a hole with a little current they work good baited with bread or crackers I even use bacon sometimes.
Trav Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 I use the wire type. I take cornmeal and ball it up inside a piece of cheesecloth and tie it with a rubber band. Works well enough. "May success follow your every cast." - Trav P. Johnson
