Had a wet guide trip today. I thought it might be a long day today when a dump truck about pulled my anchor system off the back of my boat while I was gassing my truck up this morning. A couple tightened screws later, it held for the day, though it isn't as straight as it used to be. Not even an apology from the guy, he seemed indignant that he clipped a stationary boat at a gas pump. Anyway, Bill was a great guy to spend the day with and though we got rained on literally all day, the fishing was very good. All the usual suspects fished deep.

So what are the river levels like. We are bringing our scouts down this weekend and I have a lot of first years.

Also what suggestions can you offer for fishing spin cast? I dont think we have a fly fisherman in the bunch.

The river has not risen signifigently with the rain of yesterday and last night. It depends on if we get more raintoday and tonight or if we got lots of rain upriver that I don't know about. I pretty sure the river will be fine. As for spinning gear, I'd suggest marabou jigs (1/16), deep diving rebel crawdad and panther martins.

1/4 oz spinners (rooster tail, panther martin, blue fox, mepps, etc). Cast a bit upstream, count a few to let them drift deep, then crank 'em back. Vary the retrieve until they see what is effective. Assume you will be floating canoes, so get the boys comfortable with safely chasing their snags to recover their lures. Because you really want them to be deep enough that they will hang up on the rocks periodically.

How true. Tell my wife if you're not losing them (the lures) from time to time you're not deep enough. Usually have to say that after she loses one.

I found last trip they were being taken on the drop. I would reel in at various speeds, and when I paused just bit is when they were taken.

Brain and 2sheds are on the money. But i like to cut 15 inches of line off and tie it back with a double surgons knot. Put a split shot above the knot. The knot will keep the shot from slipping down on the spinner. This will help get the spinner deeper. Good luck Boy Scouts. Teach them Catch and Release. Try barbless hooks. The fish will thank you.
