Came down for the holiday from St. Louis and fished from 6:30-1:30 on Monday and 6:30-11:30 on Tuesday (today). Had 24 fish with 9 keepers on Monday (6 off one spot--right place right time)...Had 15 fish with 3 keepers today but had to get off the water early--had the wife calling because it was too cold to go to the pool. Had a handful of jig fish but I've become addicted to catching those dropshot fish off the graph. Most fish were 20-27 ft. Found a couple of good schools today but could not stay on them in the wind...Had one spot where I dropped down and caught a 2 1/4 lb spot and the graph lit up (excited the school) and by the time the fish was done digging like a 4lb smallmouth, I could not get back on the school....

Steve, what area of the lake were you fishing? What color of 4" worm were you using? Glad you did so well down here and on a Holiday weekend even better.. Let us know..

I caught them mostly on the brown purple but also on the natural shad. I put in at Kimberling and fished as far up the white as about 2 miles past Campbell Point. I tried some crawlers last year, alternating with the worm and realized that if I found fish it did not seem to matter (although I have been told that the crawler always outfishes the worm) so I have stuck with the worm ever since. It seemed like if I found fish this week, would bite they would bite right away. It seemed that bouncing around worked best instead of trying to really work over spots that I have caught them before.

The only problem is I could not find the bigger spots. I caught them up to about 2-4 or 2-6. Last year when they were at 32-38 feet I caught several b/t 2-8 and 3 lbs....

BTW, traffic was a nightmare on Monday, and I fish LOZ 90% of the time.....

That is the reason you bring a pool boy on fishing vacations with your wife!

Steve, thanks that really cuts out alot of water for me.. Have some really good spots up that way, My Area around the DAM just has not came to life yet.. But we had the 2 month FB Jig bite with 4 plus pound smallies so I can't complain... I use a 4" worm it is a ROBO worm in Purple with a brown stripe (MMIII), it was my best color as well.

I have both types of days, some good for the crawlers and some better with the worm.. Just try both and go with the best for that day and what my client can use..

Thanks for the great report.. Good Fishing

I am coming down during the 3rd week of September and wondering what would be the best baits to try. I have had some success in Kansas Lakes for smallies on the football jig with a twin tail grub and some deep diving crank baits. I am struggling on fishing successfully in deeper water with plastic worms. When I read about fishing in 20-30 feet of water, are you guys fishing the plastic worms/night crawlers suspended or on the bottom? Any ideas would be appreciated. By the way, I will be staying near the dam but plan to boat to the James River area. Many thanks.
