Members jlpatton1 Posted September 5, 2008 Author Members Posted September 5, 2008 UPDATE.... Just talked to the Corps.. been watching the water level and it hasn't change in the last 3 hours. They said they didn't get as much rain as they expected.. so let's hope we get a reprieve this time. I do realize these lakes are for water management, however this time I felt as if the numbers did not add up to where the spillways had to be opened, especially since we were running 2 less than 24 hrs ago. I will update if anything changes, but I hope 919.4 is our crest. Lamar Patton Scotty's Trout Dock & Marina Branson, MO
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted September 5, 2008 Root Admin Posted September 5, 2008 Had to sleep on this- this is what I came up with. At first thought, "the trout would migrate out of the 80 degree plus water from the flood gates and stay in the colder generation water" BUT the problem with that is IF they ran 4 units full, I'm not sure they (corp) could inject enough O2 into the water to keep the DO up above 4 ppm. The Corp has a restriction on how much they can run in the fall because of the O2 situation. Even running 4 units now could potientially kill alot of fish in Taney. If they ran flood gates, it would kill more I'm afraid. So I wouldn't get all excited about flood gates, Leonard. I might be the demise of your walleye and smallies as well as your big browns. I'm sure the Corp is talking to MDC about the situation but at this point (AGAIN) mother nature is in control, so to speak. Told Bill this am- we've had alot of "first" this year in our lakes and rivers. This is again a first. We've never had this much rain in the fall where opening gates is a possibility.
Guest kevinkirk Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 So tell me .....is the 02 lower because the water comes off the bottom of table rock and has no 02 or very little? I never would have thot of that. Wouldnt the water falling down from the gates help to add oxygen to the water then >? The water coming out of the turbines looks to be getting air as it boils up but I have not really watched it much. You guys know that so well. School me Phil
mosouthpaw Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 water from under the lake has little oxygen. Spillway water will be hotter in temps and warmer water holds less oxygen. Fall stresses the fish enough with temps pushing 60 degrees. Adding a million or more gallons of 80-83 water doesnt help the trout one iota. When the flooding happened in the spring the water was cooler and so was taney.
DoveTail Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Warm water can not hold as much oxygen as colder water.
Guest kevinkirk Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 This site is so good. Thanks to all of you who take the time to teach us ppl who dont live there. GOT MY LOT tho and I am moving down and look forward to meeting a lot of you. So the key then is to find the pockets where there is cool water with 02? Are there any springs down taney coming up from under ground? I would put on a huge search for the fish. They are there but in small pockets I would bet. kk
mosouthpaw Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 The reason the fish hang out at the outlets is mainly because of dissolved oxygen. There might be some food but not enough. heck boats running to the cable provide oxygen, just not enough.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted September 6, 2008 Root Admin Posted September 6, 2008 I have covered fall low O2 conditions and lake turn over in articles and previous posts. I bet you'll find lots of info under the Best of Taney section. Lamar- I'm alittle confused which info you've posted is the most current. It would be helpful if you added a new post or add a new topic altogether with new news. You ARE doing us all a great service by reporting on what you're hearing from the Corp----- Thanks a bunch!!!! Phil

Phil Sorry... thought it might be better since I was updating just to put the most current on the top... Hope you guys are having fun... water running here is not bad at all. Really think a lot of communication would have helped clear up the confusion on this deal... the way it was timed, and the fact that it came behind some rain, had everyone (visitors and locals alike) thinking here we go again. They just wanted to run 15000 CFS and couldn't because of oxygen. We're not in near the shape we were back in March and April. The bigger hazard today I think is the Tracker Dealer Meeting...they're running demo boats out of the Bass Pro Marina and you don't want to go near there.. wow it's crazy. Dave Cook Posted September 8, 2008 Posted September 8, 2008 You can read from the Corp site that the low O2 levels limits the max amount to run thru the generators. The lake is depleted of oxygen at all the levels they take in water for the penstock but the surface water (down to about 20 feet) contains about 6.7 ppm DO. http://www.swl-wc.usace.army.mil/WCDS/Repo...rofiles/do2.txt That water has more oxygen in it than the turbine water that has liquid oxygen (LOX) injected. It looks like they balanced the sources to Taneycomo to keep oxygen up and temperatures down. Dave Cook Missouri Trout Fishermen's Association - Kansas City
