Fishrman
The boys and I were at it again today, fished from 11:00 to 6:00. Thought we might get bit in some run off. That did not pay off, could not get bit on the square bill today as well as yesterday or last week. Fished a long time without much, and finally pulled into Big Creek and started fishing channel banks with wind and bushes and finally found them, had 2 keepers in the boat, but had numerous fish hooked up and throw the crankbait today, they did not seem to want to eat it today, more of just slapping at it. Water temperature was around 78-79. Got the 9 year old throwing a baitcaster today. Only dug it out of one tree. Pretty proud of him. Good luck. Spinnaker
I will be heading down next Monday, Sept. 22 for a week. I am interested to know how well you usually do from noon until about 5 PM as it really slowed down for me when I was there in late May. Since then I have tried with some success the football jig at KS smallmouth lakes so I have some confidence (more likely pure luck) using that bait. Crank baits are my favorite way to fish and it appears that you are doing well with those. The water is a couple feet higher now since you got a good lick of rain around there. I assume the water is a little more stained. In general, is the water in the James area a little more stained or a lot and any tips on that score? Glad you enjoyed the day with your sons. Fishrman
As far as Cape Fair goes, I can't tell you, I very rarely make that drive. I fish primarily Kings River and the Shell Knob area. This crankbait bite is kind of crazy to me. I like the afternoon, simply because it is the only time right now I can fish. The 9 year old has mighty mite games at 11:30 so, I don't get away until 2 or 3. The football jig is something I don't do very well. So I won't comment on it. From noon to 5 pm, I would flip cover in the Kings or fish something fast. Hope this helps.
Spinnaker
Thanks Fisherman. I am staying in Hollister. I stay there because I sometimes flyfish in Taneycomo below the dam. This time it looks like the water will be too high for wadding unless I am elbow to elbow in a crowd. I may make up to the James but I would probably opt to pull my boat over there if the launch is open. Thanks again.
Champ188
kcangler, i've been doing well for months now on the football jig. i'm using a half-ounce jig (green pumpkin candy, green pumpkin Zoom Creepy Crawler trailer) and not fishing it too deep. 6-15 feet seems to be the key range and it works best on points (both main-lake and secondary) with wood or brushy cover. sometimes they grab it and haul tail, other times they nibble for awhile before taking it. don't assume the nibblers are small ones. caught a 3-pound-plus smallmouth sunday that just nibbled and pecked at it for several seconds. wait til the line tightens up and let em have it. hope this helps. Spinnaker
Thanks Champ. I am really looking forward to some bass fishing next week. My buddies and I got back from a week in Canada on Labor Day weekend. Walleye fishing is great but I like fishing for bass much more.
