Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted March 13, 2006 Root Admin Posted March 13, 2006 I see it allot... guys pull their boats from home- pull to the ramp and start the motor before it's in the water. It's more of a habit than essential. Your water pump is made of hard rubber- a sprocket tightly fitted in a case. If it's fairly old, it becomes brittle, esp if it's been in the dry air of winter. When you start the engine dry, the sprocket turns and more-times-than-not, it cracks or breaks. Now you have no water running thru the motor. Mike Adams, a guy who used to work for me, would see someone starting their motor and say, "Yea... we have a water pump for that." He changed out a few in his time with us.
Members Packman Posted March 14, 2006 Members Posted March 14, 2006 Ya thats definately a NO NO! I like to always check for a good stream coming from my motor, makes me feel good to know its staying cool. In my dads boat they took it a step further, and plummed the warm water into a sink, where you can warm a can of soup or rinse your hands after catching a big one.
