podum Posted October 28, 2008 Posted October 28, 2008 Fished below the dam last Friday with my dad from about 11:00 am til 4:00. Fishing was very good. One turbine was rolling most of the afternoon and creating a good current, but not too much. We caught 10 whites (some were small hybrids) - all in the 13 to 15 inch range; one 16 inch crappie, many small largemouth bass, a big drum and what we think were some large shad (see pictures). Some of the boats drifting by were landing some nice cats. All of our fish came on one of two baits: a pearl sassy shad or a 3 inch white slider (both rigged on a 1/8 ounce jig head). Fun stuff. If anyone can confirm what the fish in the third picture is, I'd appreciate it. We think it was a large shad (caught 2 of them). They were both about 16 inches long and jumped multiple times. Kinda fun. It turned into the old Steve Martin Saturday Night skit with everyone around asking "What the hell is that" Having problems with the picture upload. Working on it. I wish I had more time more than I wish I had more money.
podum Posted October 29, 2008 Author Posted October 29, 2008 That's got to be it saluki. I found a picture on the MDC website and it matches. I gotta figure out how to upload the pictures. I wish I had more time more than I wish I had more money.
slider Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 I talked to a friend of mine who has been fishing up there and he caught what he has looked up to be called goldeyes. I caught a fish at warsaw one night and didnt know what it was, after I searched fore a picture that is what I thought it was. My first thought was it was a skipjack. did the fish have gold around its eyes? slider DONT EVER GIVE UP MOSES WAS A BASKET CASE ONCE!
creek wader Posted October 30, 2008 Posted October 30, 2008 Check out this site. http://www.pondboss.com/forums/ubbthreads....p;Number=134907 In the pic below the goldeye is on bottom the skipjack on top. Growing up in Nebr. and fishing feeder streams of the mighty Mo. We caught a lot of goldeyes. They are toothy critters and will jump a lot. After seeing the pic with both of them in there, I can see the confusion. The skipjack is narrower or more sleek if you will. One site stated that almost all species that eat baitfish will eat the skipjack herring until they reach about 5" or bigger. The average adult skip jack is around 16 in. I caught several skip jacks below Bagnell last time I was there. ... I hope this helps. ... wader wader
Seth Posted October 30, 2008 Posted October 30, 2008 That's awesome if those really are skipjacks. I've only ever heard of people getting them below Chain of Rocks and Alton Dam on the Mississippi. They are the bait most catfisherman swear by and will drive out of state just to catch to bring back to MO and use as cut bait.

Had 12 Skipjack and landed 12 cats on the gut packets in about an hour. One of the best cat baits hands down. Angler At Law
