I am trying to figure out a decent christmas gift for myself, or at least my wife is trying to get me to decide on one. First on the list is a new Sage Z-Axis, second a new Lampson reel, third is up for grabs. I feel like before I start really dumping $$$ into some of this stuff I should feel a bit more comfortable with my cast, like being fitted for custom golf clubs. Maybe the first step is a good instruction with a quality instructor. Are there any in the KC area that come to mind?

This portion of the board seems dead, but it is worth a try.

I'm kicking around hosting a casting clinic early next year or in the spring. If I can find a place inside big enough and cheap enough, I'll do it early. If not, it will have to be in the spring. I will, though, have a CCI or a MCI or both as instructors. I should know something within a few weeks.

The name escapes me but there is a fly fishing club in the KC area and I would venture a guess that there is a certified casting instructor among the bunch. I would contact them and see what they can do. I bet one of the members of that club will chime in.

I think that club you are talking about is in Blue Springs. I belive Dave Cook is the guy you need to get ahold of and he is a member of this forum so if you do a member search you can message him.

Missouri Trout Fishermens Association (MTFA) in Kansas City is a trout/fly fishing club that meets in Fleming Park which is between Blue Springs and Lees Summit. It's across the road from Lake Jacomo. We do have a website for more information http://www.geocities.com/kcmtfa/ Our next meeting is scheduled for Dec 2 intead of our normal meeting night because of the holidays.

As far as casting instruction, we don't have any classes scheduled at this time but you can get one on one instruction from other members. If that doesn't suit you you can try Matt at Rainbow Fly shop in Independence. We also have a member who works part time in the fly shop at Bass Pro in Olathe, KS and I know they have a small pond outside to try out casting fly rods.

I will have to check it out. I am just outside Liberty on the north side, so it isnt super close. I believe that is a general theme for most of the trout fisherman in KC though.

Jeff -

I would call Kevin at K&K Flyfishers or Matt at Rainbow Fly Shop. I think either one would give you some great pointers. Kevin probably has the rod you're looking for. I tested a variety of rods there before my final purchase. I thought I was looking for a fast rod, but turns out I am more of a Medium action caster.

As Brian said, Kevin can hook you up. I went over there this past fall when they were having their Sage sale. Long story short Kevin took me outside with a Sage and 20 minutes later and his suggestions I was doing a lot better. Oh yea, and my wallet was a little lighter!!
