steveearle Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 Any concerns mentioned about having the buddy after the pro-am instead of before....Any talk of people poaching pro's spots the next day? I am sure this is one of the reasons Heartland does it the other way around. I know most are honest, but just wondering if that concern was voiced?
focused fishing Posted December 1, 2008 Author Posted December 1, 2008 Steve, I wasn't at the meeting so I don't know if it was brought up. My thoughts are you can't legislate morality and if someone is going to "poach" a spot from a pro they are going to do it anyway whether there is a rule or not. Some am's have been doing this for years, I personally have fish a pro-am one week and gone back to a spot in another tournament the following week and found my previous week's am partner sitting on it. Might of had words with an angler about it but there really isn't anything I could do about the situation. One of the reasons for having the Pro-Am on Saturday is the fish are less pressured on Saturday, Sunday is usually much tougher after you've had a buddy tournament. The one on one competition of a pro-am is tougher than two on two so they felt the it would increase the weights and participation by having it first. The major draw back is a lack of practice time for guys fishing the pro-am, if you work all week and then fish on Saturday you will not a get a day of practice the day before. denjac Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 Its a sticky wicket when you show someone your spot. I prefished hard for a central division BASS tournament on Eufala in Oklahome one year. Found a good bunch of fish on a flooded willow bank up in Duchess creek. Was going to check them two days before the tournament and a non boater from our team wanted to go, so I took him with me. Guess what, the day of the tournament I run to them and the non boater from the Missouri team was on the bank with a guy from Texas. I pulled in and started to fish and the Texas guy told me to leave it , it was there spot. I told him he wouldnt even have been there if it hadnt been for me showing the non boater where it was and that I was going to fish it. Some words were exchanged and he said he was going to protest me on the so many feet away from a tournament boat rule. I roared off mad and went fishing in some other spots I had. Long story short the Texas guy won the tournament off that spot. I learned that there are no ethics when money is involved and if you show someone your spot its gone. Guess I shouldnt judge over that one incident but am still bitter over it and it has been 18 years. Dennis Boothe Joplin Mo. Guess I shouldnt judge over that one incident but am still bitter over it and it has been 18 years. It doesn't even have to have money involved. I fished in a club with only trophies involved and a lot of small money tournys over a 30 yr period and I've seen simular instances of this behavior many times. IMO it's egos that cause a lot of this. Money just makes it worse. I think that is one of the main reasons why some of the more succesfull fishermen get ' burn out'. JMHO
