edwin Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Hi all - I've noticed that more than a few of the folks on this site use a Humminbird SI sonar. I'm not looking to spend the cash req'd to get a 900 or 1100 series unit. Based on your experience, is the 700 series smaller screen still sufficient to add some significant value over a std sonar? Thanks in advance for your feedback. edwin "Advantages are taken, not handed out"
wily Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 i was looking on cabelas.com today -- there are some killer sales on lowrance units
jay bird Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 I have the 797 and it is pretty impressive. I still need to learn how to use it better, but the potential is there. The ability to find underwater structure is amazing, I found this stack of boulders off this peagravel shoreline that I am sure is going to hold some nice smallies. (Beaver Lake). The new 798 are even better with a higher res screen and the dual SD cards slots. Mine only has one SD card slot so this means if I am using my GPS software I have to use one card, and then put in a different card to capture pictures, GPS sites etc. Kind of a pain and really painful to see that they fixed the problem this year. Still kind of hard to drop close to a grand on a fish finder, but the first time you go by some bridge pillings and see fish on one and none on the other, or when you realize you are looking at a picnic table that was under water is shows you what these things can do. Yahoo has an Humminbird SI forum that has some really impressive picture.
Members Doug Weston Posted January 9, 2009 Members Posted January 9, 2009 I noticed when I was shopping, the 798's screen is also a little bit larger than the 797, and it has an internal GPS antennae. That helps if you don't want to put another hole in your boat. They are the same price at Bass Pro so I'd get the 798 if getting one new. I want ahead and forked out the dough for the 997, but it seemed the 798 would be great too. It was a hard choice though I made the family crazy while trying to decide at the electronics counter... Thanks in advance for your feedback. edwin Edwin, well you know how I feel about these.. Yes the 798 is well worth the money and will give you the same performance as my big units.. You can get on the internet and search for 798 c SI units and get a much better price in the long run.. Here is one I found right off the bat.. http://www.midwesthuntersoutlet.com/item.aspx?pid=107008 $912.00 and other for around 1,000.00, before you buy call these places and speak with them make sure these include the transducer, you can really save alot of money if you do alittle research alot better prices than Bass Pro for sure!! This is how I bought my first units until I was put on there pro staff, my price for my first 900 unit was as cheap as the pro staff cost, so look around and save some money.. And if you get the time yes stop by Doug's site on Yahoo sideimaging groups, great place spend some time on there myself. I was thinking about placing my unit on that site myself, going to replace it with the new 1197.. I would sell my 997cSI for 1500.00 and it still under warranty.. Good Luck and let me know when you get one I can assist with installation and reading it.. Good Fishing Capt. Don Capt. edwin Posted January 9, 2009 Author Posted January 9, 2009 thanks for the feedback. One more question - any issue using the internal antenna GPS vs external? I'd really prefer to go internal if possible. "Advantages are taken, not handed out"

Jason Essary Posted January 10, 2009 Posted January 10, 2009 Don, I have a question. I have two Lcx 15's on my boat. Love using them for 2d deep fishing. Will a Side image graph work with this two units or will they interfere with each other. Thought of adding one. Or will it replace my older ones for deep bite. Which ones would be comparable to what I am use to. And lastly, if I purchase one, would u install it rear for looking while driving slow or on the Trolling M to watch while fishing?? Been reading some of the info on these and U are sounding like an advertisement Essary Construction - Honest work for honest price Custom Construction and Remodeling Call for free quotes (417)338-6418 http://essarycustomhomes.com/

Been reading some of the info on these and U are sounding like an advertisement Coyote, I have seen it used both ways.. First Yes you can run all of these at the same time, if you have the room. There are alot of Pro's doing just that! Personnally I would get rid of my console or back Lowrance and replace with the 997 or 798 and used it for both SI and 2-D off of the back of your boat. You can run these up front for 2-d or deep water bite, which is what I do as well. But I do not used it for SI on the front on the trolling motor, you can do it, I just don't personnally like it, I get to much hard to read pictures on the SI.. You have to go slow and straight to make it work well, but it does work. Well I do sound like an add but I make my living with these guys and they do work very well, just ask Alton Jones he used his to win the 2008 Bassmaster Classic..
