I am looking to upgrade my ancient camera with a moderate priced new one. I am taking it on Peacock Bass trip to Amazon and want it to be light weight/decent zoom/durable/ easy to use by a "non-techie"/ and still get some nice photos. My research has led me to the Canon PowerShot SD880. Any opinions from the experts?? Thanks.

Nice glass lens, AA battery capable, large viewfinder, SD memory cards are all what you really need to look at. Avoid rechargables that require a dock. Waterproof or water resistant is nice. Quick startup time really helps

I really like my Olympus Stylus 850sw and it is water and shock proof. You can take underwater pics with it as well. Is small and fits in my fanny pack.

I use a Pentax Optio W60. It's waterproof, compact, takes awesome fish pix. It's the kind of camera that can be handed to a passer by and get a great shot with the auto functions.

I did extensive research on digital cameras to find one for my wife for Christmas. I wound up getting her a Canon A590 IS and she really likes it. Though it's not waterproof, it takes the most excellent images and the Image Stabilization is AWESOME! I can't TAKE a blurry picture with it when I try! I did look at the SD880 and it was in the running as well, but to me, I got as much as I wanted from the A590 at a lower price.

A couple of things I would consider with the SD880 is the fact that it does take a battery pack and not AA batteries like the A590.

I would always opt for an image stabilization camera. You want to also buy a couple of SD cards at 1-4 Gb each and I would recommend SDHC if you have a camera compatible to them. You'll probably never take enough images to fill even a 2Gb card, but I always think a spare "just in case" is a good thing.

In return for all this valuable advice you are getting from us, we DO expect LOTS and LOTS of pictures of HUGE peacock bass to adorn this forum in the future.... Good luck on a GREAT trip!!! (You lucky dawg.... )

Thanks to all for the input. I am going to do a "hands-on" this weekend. Terry, I promise to post some pic's but my trip isn't until next Jan (2010). I am one of those guys that over prepares and by the time this trip comes around I will have spent a fortune on new toys.
