tippet7 Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 I took my 10 yr step son to the lake to let him try his hand at fly fishing. i set him up with my 7.5 foot 4 wt rod. i let him start off at chute #2, showed him how to "cast" and let him alone. within 5 mins of being in the water, he had his first trout landed on a fly rod. (Thanks Don-but the picture you took of us actually did come out just fine!) After a while we moved down to the rebar area. everyone seemed to be hooking up and he was pretty excited. he hooked into several fish down there using a variation of the "g bug" (i think i will call my version Z bug in honor of Zach) anyway...he hooked into this little bow, fought and landed it without any help at all from me!! right after we let this one go, he was going to get out of the water to warm up his hands, he handed me the fly rod (i did not fish while he was in the water..this was his day!!) i hooked into a pretty big bow (around 20 inches) Zach's hands were no longer cold and he came over to fight the fish. he fought for a good 3 mins until he dropped the rod too low and the bow spit the hook. in this picture he doesnt look too disappointed about it. we left about 230, with zach landing 3 fish, me landing 6 and zach totally hooked on fly fishing!! You are so stupid you threw a rock at the ground and missed.
duckydoty Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Great report! Glad you guys had a good time. A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!! Visit my website at.. Ozark Trout Runners
DD'sMC Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Truly one of the greatest joys in life is to take a child fishing, and have them catch atleast one. Great report, thanks for sharing! We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. The two best times to go fishing? When it is raining and when it is not.
Terry Beeson Posted January 12, 2009 Posted January 12, 2009 Great story! It's always a great thing to see young folks get into this sport. You need to consider taking him to Dry Run Creek and for sure bringing him to Sowbug this March and Conclave next October and get him in the youth conclave... Don Posted January 17, 2009 Posted January 17, 2009 I know it was a special day for you guys. I hope he is hooked in flyfishing. Good to meet you again. Here are my belated pics. Don May I caught you a delicious bass.
Mikey Posted January 19, 2009 Posted January 19, 2009 Takin my 8 yr old son and my wife's 15 yr old half brother up to the Lower Illinois this coming Sunday. Not for any fly fishing mind you, I'll be teaching the 15 yr old how to operate a spinning rig. It's his first time wade and/or trout fishing. As is usual, I'll take my spinning rig mostly for show since I'll be too busy assisting these green horns with their fish. Hopefully...I'd rather they kept me busy landing then me outfishing them. Which, unfortunately, is never a problem with my 8 yr old. Always outfishes me. Mikey Each time I buy a new fly............ My wife gives me the same look........ I give her when she buys another purse... ..............................
