am4mu Posted January 25, 2009 Author Posted January 25, 2009 Thanks for the help guys, I do appreciate it. Yes I have been trying to look at these vises locally. Cabellas has some of the Renzetti line and some of the Griffin line and also Peak. K&k does not have much of anything and the two Bass Pro's up here are a joke. Have not found Dyna king up here anywhere. Rainbow Flyshop says they will create an account and get me a Dyna King if that is what I land on. Will keep looking, Rainbow sold me a $40 import rotary that will hold me till I find what I am after. Doug Kiefer Doug Kiefer Independence, Mo h: am4mu@comcast.net w: dougk@schulzetool.com
brittsnbirds Posted January 25, 2009 Posted January 25, 2009 Doug- I agree with you about the BPS's up here. Have you gone all the way over to Cabela's? They have several vices set up that you can play on. That is what I did before I dumped my Dyna King and switched to a Peak. I got the pedestal version. It works great, I purchased the smaller midge jaws as I tie some pretty small stuff. Only 2 complaints, it did not come with a material holder (spring) and the base is very heavy making portability a pain. If I take my fly tying stuff with me now I take one of my old cheap clamp on units. Based on price I would recommend the Peak. Pat
Ill Trout Bum Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 I really like my Griffin Montant Mongoose. I've been tying heavily on it for 3 years now and no problems. Griffin updated the Mongoose for 2009. I've been selling the entire Griffin line for several years now and have had no complaints from my customers. Griffin has an excellent customer service policy and warrants their products for life. They are also still made in the USA. Check out my site at http://www.heartlandflygear.com Scott

Thom Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 I just pourchased the apex from BPS. It comes with a pedistal and is very compact. I has a rotary feature and is stainless steel with a lifetime warantee. I know it it not top of the line but for $ 99 it works great for me. It is a perfect traveling vise also. You can take it out of the box at Bass pro and try it. very easy to use. Thom Thom Harvengt

Terry Beeson Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 I'll add this to the mix... When you are looking at a vise, I would say the best idea is to buy a good generic pedestal THEN buy the vise with a clamp. I have the clamp for my Renzetti that came with it, but I already had a good base to put it on. I really wish all vises came with a two part mast that would allow both pedestal and clamp mouning. Some do, some don't...
