ozark trout fisher Posted January 25, 2009 Posted January 25, 2009 First of all, the bad news first. I hook no trout. Now the good news. Some smallmouth, and suckers were caught, and I did see a pretty good number of rainbow trout alongside the suckers and smallies, but they were just a little to scared to bite. I tried to be as stealthy as possible, even to the point of getting down on my hands and knees to fish likely pools, but they just didn't want my 1/24 ounce Panther Martin. I will say that the biggest trout I saw was 7". I knew I would find trout, because there are 290 per mile, a lot for a creek this size. But I also knew they would be wary, and they were. Man is this creek full of suckers and other minnows. The trout are not going to go hungry ever.
Members fiveweight Posted January 30, 2009 Members Posted January 30, 2009 Where did you see the number 290 per mile? The figure I heard from a conservation agent a few years ago was under 100 for the entire stream by some census they took. Maybe that only counts adults or just the ones they caught, but I don't think of it as a high density stream by any means. I sometimes find a few fish but there are also large stretches of water with no fish so like you said, the pools are a good spot. Smallies = bonus!
Gavin Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 290 per mile...seems a little high for that creek...Sure they werent talking about Southern Red Belly Dace? Lots of those in that crick.

They surveyed 900 trout in the measured 3.1 mile stretch of public creek the most recent survey, which works out to be 290 per mile. This was according to Missouri Fishing Prospects, but they did say that surveys before this one showed consirderably fewer. Here's the link http://mdc.mo.gov/fish/prospects/streams.htm#bluesprings
