Members coloradofly Posted March 4, 2009 Members Posted March 4, 2009 I have heard that Pomme holds some nice tiger muskies?? I am from Colorado and have spent many hours chasing pike with a fly rod. Can anyone tell me when the best time of year to catch some muskies is? Is there a time of year that they spawn, or move to shallow water? any information would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know much about this, but I'll tell you what I do know. Pomme de Terre is considered one of the best muskie lakes in the region, it is certainly the best in the state. (Missouri has five muskie lakes.) I'm pretty sure they stay fairly shallow during the fall and spring. May and October specifically. I've never heard of anyone fishing for Pomme Muskies with a fly rod, but it could work. Most use big spinners and crankbaits. Pomme de Terre also has plenty of largemouth bass, crappie, catfish, and bluegill, and to be honest they are far more abundant than the musky. By the way, I also used to pike fish a lot in the Yampa River of Colorado when I lived in Craig. Great river, lots of trout, pike, and smallmouth. I don''t know if you just moved here, but Missouri also has some great year round trout fishing, which surprised me when I got here. Good luck fishing!
Walleyedmike Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 I haven't fished muskies on Pomme, (yet). I don't think they've stocked any tiger muskies for quite a few years, but they stock pure muskies in Pomme every year. Here's a link to the MDC musky stocking program, it's long, but I found it kind of interesting. http://mdc4.mdc.mo.gov/Documents/14422.pdf WM

And Walleyedmike is right on, they are pure strain musky. If you did hook one on a fly-rod, wow what a fight that would be. Most of the Muskies in Pomme de Terre are in the 35 to 45 inch range, and some are bigger. Catch rates are actually better than in most lakes in classic musky states like Minnesota and Wisconsin. Just don't expect it to be much like Northern Pike fishing in Colorado. Musky are infinitely harder to catch. But they are usually much bigger.
Members coloradofly Posted March 6, 2009 Author Members Posted March 6, 2009 WOW, yeah we have a cabin just outside of Steamboat springs. My last trip up there we floated the yampa outside of Craig... We did not catch any Pike that trip but we absolutely HAMMERED the smallmouth. I actually moved to Arkansas about 3 years ago to finish college at the UofA, but i still make it back to Colorado for some fishing. I appreciate all the information, i am going to give pomme a try here in a month or two.

Awesome smallmouth and pike fishing anywhere around Hayden, and excellent trout fishing from Stagecoach to Hayden. It's in my opinion about the perfect river.
brownieman Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 I have never fished pomme myself but intend to. I know in past years it has been said that you hook up with a musky once for every 30 hrs of time spent fishing. Don't know if this is still the case but there are some dandys in there...suppose to be the premier lake in the state for musky fishing. I have a boat so if someone wants to hit it sometime give me a hollar...would sure be glad to give it a shot if my pocketbook will allow me to do so. I try to hit Truman a few times a year and pomme is kinda on the way so I could possibly kill 2 birds woth 1 stone, ya know. later on My friends say I'm a douche bag ?? Avatar...mister brownie bm <><
redbird Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 Musky like colder water and are more active in the spring and the fall. Most of my musky on Pomme have come while bass fishing, mostly with crankbaits(suspended Rouges) or surface plugs (esp. Zara Spook), and the most and the largest have been in the spring, while the bass are in pre spawn, Like now, or in the fall when everything is on the feed, and the white bass are on the windy points. Pomme is a jewel of a lake with some nice fish. It is a very pretty lake that gets mostly local traffic and gets passed over for the bigger lakes which is alright with everyone who fishes it. Good luck and let us know if you catch any on fly. That would be an experience! Im not a Cardinals fan, but I am a Cardinal. If you know me you know what that means.

Don Posted March 12, 2009 Posted March 12, 2009 I've heard of bass fishermen picking up muskies on spinnerbaits on Fellows Lake in Springfield. I.m thinking a large perch pattern for a big flyrod might be the thing if I were to go. Good Luck, Don Don May I caught you a delicious bass.
