Kayser Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 Had some time to kill this afternoon, so I headed down to the Little Piney in the Blue Ribbon section for 3 hours. I've never fished this stream before, so I tried flies they could see- eggs, san juans, and big princes. Wound up catching 11 rainbows, some big chubs (looked kinda like goldfish), and this one fish that I don't know what it was- about 7" long with a black stripe running down it's side, built like a big fathead chub crossed with a sculpin. Biggest trout was about 14" and FAT!! Had 3 others almost as big and just as fat, and a 10" male in full spawn colors. Mainly, I think I just got lucky today. Still, I just might have a new favorite trout stream, as far as rainbows go... Rob WARNING!! Comments to be interpreted at own risk. Time spent fishing is never wasted.
jdmidwest Posted March 5, 2009 Posted March 5, 2009 That would have been a hornyhead chub. Did he have bumps on his head? I need to fish the Piney this summer, I have not been there in years. creek wader Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 Nice. Glad to hear you did well. I agree with flyfishmaster, we gotta have visual aids. I hit the Little Piney a few times, nice little stream. I wish I had some free time on my hands, I'd try it again. wader

I fished Little Piney about five times now, and have never caught more than two or three in a trip. But I spin fish, and I guess it is more of a fly fishing creek. I did, and this still makes me a little sick, long distance release a massive trout in the Blue Ribbon section one time. At least three or four pounds, possibly bigger. And when I was reeling him in, there was a fat, fifteen inch or so trout right beside him.
