XP 590 Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 I fished the blue ribbon area last weekend for the first time. Does anybody have any experience in the white ribbon area? I've fished other white ribbon streams and had good luck but was wondering about that part of the Current from Cedar on down. Accessible? Wadeable? Any fish etc? Thanks
brownieman Posted March 24, 2009 Posted March 24, 2009 They stock that strech or used to with 500 bows every 2 weeks during summer months. I have caught some nice holdover bows down there also...a few big browns. Just below Cedar it gets unwadable quick and no apparant foot trail along the water. I have wade fished down around Welch Cave but the wading is very limited. There are fish and the water looks great down there but you almost have to float it to fish it well at all. If you time it right or have some inside info on when they stock it they stock pretty heavy right behind the bridge and a couple of spots just below the Cedar bridge...depends on if they stock it by boat or truck. I have also caught some nice smallies and some monster gogs on that strech...not many gogs but they sure were nice ones...about forgot the pickerel, have caught several decent Grass Pickerel. Hope this helps you a little My friends say I'm a douche bag ?? Avatar...mister brownie bm <><
Gavin Posted March 24, 2009 Posted March 24, 2009 Cedar to Akers is a nice stretch of water...but you will want a canoe..Aker's Ferry Canoe rental is right there at the takeout if you need a boat. Its one of my favorite spring time floats, especially when the dogwoods are in bloom... but the fishing can be hit or miss..it just depends on when they stock it. I've usuallly had better fishing on the second half of the float...Medlock down to Akers or Welch to Akers. Cheers.
Mark Posted March 24, 2009 Posted March 24, 2009 Are there plenty of gravel bars to camp? Any dangerous shoals where a fella could dump a canoe? I can dump about anywhere but would hate to lose my cooler!!
Gavin Posted March 24, 2009 Posted March 24, 2009 Its an easy float...its a bit wider and slower than the upper stretch...and not much water till you get down to Welch but there are some deep holes that rule out wading, maybe some minor stretches of small standing waves and a couple logs and rocks to avoid. Plenty of small gravel bars to camp on, but if you have a bunch I'd camp around Medlock or on the big bar near just across and upstream from Welch Landing. Firewood can be scarce on the big bars..but thats about it. Cheers.
Mark Posted March 24, 2009 Posted March 24, 2009 Thanks, Gavin, I'm an Eleven Point loyalist but want to do the Upper Current this year. I want to do the White Ribbon area mainly. I have my own canoe and am assuming that Akers Ferry rental people will provide a shuttle up to Cedar Grove. Correct??
Gavin Posted March 24, 2009 Posted March 24, 2009 Mark if your familiar with the 11pt, The Upper Current wont present any problems for you..More gravel to camp on, great scenery, less water, more floaters, no jet boats above Round Spring in the Summer. Plenty of outfitters to choose from...Akers Ferry canoe will run you up to Cedar...Jadwin will do it too and they also service the Baptist to Cedar Stretch. Price them cuz shuttles arent cheap down there. Some others...Current River canoe operates out of Pulltite CG, Carr's is down at Round Spring. Silver Arrow on Hwy 19 works that area too. Aker's to Pulltite, and Pulltite to Round Spring are nice floats, great scenery and some caves to explore, but the fishing is usually slow till you get down near Round Spring. Cheers.
