trizkid Posted March 28, 2009 Posted March 28, 2009 was just wondering if the use of a trailer or dropper fly is illegal in the catch and release area? TrIzzout
laker67 Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 anybody know?????? I can't answer that with a yes or a no, but I can tell you that it is not a good option for that small amount of water. You will foul hook more fish than you catch.
flyfishmaster Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 Triz, If the posted sign does not specify it is not allow then you can do it. Other wise, since it is legal in the park it is legal in the C & R area as well. I have double rigged there multiple times and Laker67 has a good point. Every other fish was a foul hook from my experience. Later, FFM Woo Hoo Fish On!!
trizkid Posted March 29, 2009 Author Posted March 29, 2009 thanks for the info .....i do understand how you would foul hook them but i am talking about 4inchs of line between the two fly's for the use with a "sercet pattern" a couple buddys of mine and i figured out to work well.......anyway i know the sign says nothing about the issue but i had heard someone say they thought the use of a second fly was illegal but i guess they are just wrong.....proly shouldnt have believed him when he told me he had been coming to montauk for 20 years and has never looked at the huge lunks in the hatchery and has never even attempted to fish the c&r area TrIzzout
DoveTail Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 There are several secret patterns that work well in the C&R section.

You better spread it out to seven so that it won't be considered a multiple hook for a single fly. I know the single hook rule applies. You will walk right by the hatchery office on your way to C&R, stop and ask to be sure.
trizkid Posted March 30, 2009 Author Posted March 30, 2009 smart thinking...i didnt know that TrIzzout
Geoff Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 There are several secret patterns that work well in the C&R section. such as??? i have never gotten any of those fish...i had one last year i think but i guess i had a not in my leader and it snapped when he ate my big nasty ugly grasshopper thing "When you do things right, people wont be sure you've done anything at all."
Ill Trout Bum Posted May 15, 2009 Posted May 15, 2009 I've always had a lot of luck using scuds in the C&R area. Also, small dries are great at times. Keep in mind these fish see a lot of flies as they are confined to a relatively small area. Good Luck. Scott
