Members Scott Samuels Posted April 10, 2009 Members Posted April 10, 2009 I recently purchased a 2 man boat and am taking her out on a maiden fishing trip at Springfield Lake tomorrow and need advice on where are some good spots, what to use etc. I plan on putting in at the new boat launch ramp by the bridge. Any advice would be greatly appreciated even advice on which direction to go when I put in. I don't really care what I catch just want to catch something. THANKS! Scott
binman Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 If you head back towards the Springfield Lake Park that whole bank you get to both sides are really good bass fishing try using a 6 in. berkely power worm in solid black that's what I always caught my good fish on. There are also a few crappie spots but it is too cold still in my opinion. Brandon Inman

I havent fished the park in a long time, but I used to have a lot of luck aroud the lily pads throwing white spinnerbaits tipped w/ 2 1/2" white grubs, and also just light jig heads w/ the same grubs. Throw them up tight against the outside edges and let them sink to the bottom them bring the up w/ a jerk and slow roll them back to you.
Members TRSmallie Posted April 16, 2009 Members Posted April 16, 2009 There is great fishing on this lake. I fish it a lot!!! You can't ever go wrong with a 1/2 oz wht spinnerbait as long as the water temp is above 54 deg. and got some wind. most of the lake is less than 7ft deep except the channel where only a few places is 15 to 20 ft deep. The topwater fishing on Spfl Lk. is outstanding(buzz bait, spook, or my new favorite Wake bait) The fish are pretty friendly to a rattle trap bait as well. When the wind dies look no further than a 1/4 to 5/16 oz jig or your favorite soft plastic to get you bit on any bank with chunck rock. As you familiarize yourself with the lake you will learn these banks quite well. Wind out of the north fish the railroad tracks. wind out of the south fish the bank from the bluff to the park. Here are some pics of fish from that lake.
smallmouthjoe Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 Man, great pics. I hear a lot of negative things said about Springfield Lake and my question is always why? There's a healthy population of quality fish in there and your pictures prove it.
Members fisherman wannabe Posted April 17, 2009 Members Posted April 17, 2009 TRSmallie that was one of the best postings I hav ever seen. Thank You. Can anyone tell me if you can take a boat on the lake with a larger outboard if you leave it out of the water and pull the prop?

Members moduck38834 Posted April 17, 2009 Members Posted April 17, 2009 I don't think so. You are not supposed to at all. I have seen people do it, but wouldn't do it myself. As to the reports....I agree with what all has been said, but I have found that going upstream past the bridges and into the fallen timber area yield some NICE bass on jigs and soft plastic. I ALWAYS run up there, especially late into the evenings and make sure to fish the flats by the bridge there on my way out before it gets too dark with a topwater. I've caught several LM over 3 lbs and up to about 5 lbs up there. I've also done the same in the open area in front of the viewing blind by slow rolling spinnerbaits and bumping the stumps/brush down there.

My biggest complaint about the lake is during the summer when the water all but stops flowing over the dam the water below it gets kinda stagnant and really doesnt smell very good. As long as there is a decent water flow over the dam it is a good place to fish I used to fish it from the shore almost every day after work. My only other complaint was the last time I was in the park (about 5 yrs ago) in the summer, I almost stepped on 5 snakes in a period of about 20 minutes. 1 of which I am almost psitive was a cottonmouth and one of which was a copperhead, but I have heard that the shores are better now.
