Bman Posted May 13, 2009 Posted May 13, 2009 Gentlemen, This I've wondered about for some time. Why under trout parks is the heading"Maramec State Park/Springs " ? These are two different places. Meramec State Park is way downstream near Sullivan. No trout there. Maramec Spring Park is not a state park, it is owned/operated by the James Foundation in St James Missouri. Bruce Omans High Ridge, Mo The only good line is a tight line

Definitely two very different places. Trout at Maramec Spring Park, and smallies and catfish and Meramec State Park. This isn't the first time I've seen it confused. One time I had a friend ask me about 100 questions about how to fish at the spring park, and came back complaining that he had only caught bass and goggle-eye. Turns out, he didn't know the difference between the two, and ended up at the State Park, not the Spring Park. I got a pretty good laugh out of that.

Well now I am confused, which is perfectly normal for me. Is Meramec Caverns located at Meramec State Park? If so, then in 1973, I saw several anglers below the caverns in waders with fly rods. They were standing side by side in a riffle, and gave every appearance that they were trout fishermen. When you said "no trout "at the state park, it made me recall this incident. Anyone know?
Bman Posted May 24, 2009 Author Posted May 24, 2009 Hey laker, The Caverns are at Stanton, the State Park is at Sullivan. Very close. There are a few probable reasons why you saw this: A: They were fishing for Smallies. B: There are some private springs that may have been in trout production in the area, or just up stream.Escaped trout do end up in the area. (shhhh) C: They got confused as my post pointed out and thought they were at Maramec Spring Park , of course in '73 this wouldn't have had anything to do with O.A. On a side note notice the difference in spelling..." Maramec Spring Park " different from"Meramec River". Which is correct according to the James Foundation that owns/operates the park. Another note: The water above the hwy 8 access, (the start of the trophy trout area) even a days float up, does contain some trout as well mainly from private springs. This area is floatable mainly in the spring, tougher during lower flows. The section of the trophy trout water between hwy 8 (above MSP) down to the point the spring branch enters is often passed over by floaters & fishermen in their haste to get to where the spring branch enters. Get the hint? It is very wadeable. Contains a lot of crawfish, and Sculpins. Nice trout and smallies might be found there as well...but I didn't say that. The only good line is a tight line
