Members Tenn.Trout Posted May 16, 2009 Members Posted May 16, 2009 hello Missourians, I'm a seasoned bass fisherman that has fallin' in love with fly fishing. We've some great rivers in Tenn. (Tellico, Hiawasse) and we've decided to explore the Current for four days at the end of May. We'll be camping at Pulltite and shuttling our canoes for daily runs. My float plan is day1-Cedar Grove to Akers ferry, day 2, Akers to Pulltite, Day 3, Pulltite to Round Springs, Day 4, lower section of the Jack's Fork, evenings 2 and 3 at the Dry Bean Saloon for adult mischief. Does this sound reasonable ... any suggestions? I'm rather new to fly fishing, so I won't bore you with ridiculous questions about flies. I get excited with a well placed cast, if I catch a rainbow then I'm blessed. great forum ... very informative. Cheers, Tenn.Trout
Brian Sloss Posted May 16, 2009 Posted May 16, 2009 If you are looking for trout, you need to spend some time upriver at Tan Vat and Baptist camp area. A lot of good wading water and if water is high enough, you could float it as well. A trip to the Current for trout, would be lacking if some time wasn't spent fishing the blue ribbon area though. www.elevenpointflyfishing.com www.elevenpointcottages.com (417)270-2497

Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted May 16, 2009 Root Admin Posted May 16, 2009 TT- Brian and Sam are the ones to talk to about the Current. Brian has provided tons of information on flies and such in past topics, as well as on oa proper in articles. Sam Potter also have an article on oa. I'm sure you'll find southern Missouri rivers to your liking... Hey- when you've finished your trip, we'd love to hear about your experience. And pictures are always nice!! Thanks!

Carpsucker, I'm finding some great info. on S. Potter's website and the more I browse this forum I'm finding about all i need to know. I appreciate the response. It's great to find a forum that encourages tourists and freely provides information that will make planning our trip much easier. No doubt we'll have a grand time. Looks like the weather has been wreaking havoc on the upper sections, it's been a while since i paddled around a bend to find myself head-on with a blow down. Thanks again and I'll report back with photos and stories first of June. Cheers

Al Agnew Posted May 17, 2009 Posted May 17, 2009 If it was me I wouldn't spend the time below Akers. The Akers to Round Spring stretch is beautiful, but not really very good fishing for either trout or smallmouth. The lower Jacks Fork is better for smallies (no trout in the Jacks Fork). Or if you want to do more fishing for smallmouth, go below Round Spring. You can actually get into some smallies as well as the trout from Cedar Grove to Akers, as well. But like the others said, Tan Vat or Baptist Camp to Cedar Grove is a must for trout...don't know how well the obstructions will be cleared by the time you get there, but there should be enough water.

Blue Ribbon is good like everyone says. Cedar to Akers is also good for trout this time of year. If you want to wade fish some, you absolutely have to try Montauk State Park. No floating there, but it is stocked daily with trout March-October, so you won't get skunked. You probably won't get skunked in Blue Ribbon or White Ribbon either. If you're looking for trout and not smallmouth, don't bother with the Current below Akers, or anywhere on the Jacks Fork. The Jacks Fork is amazing for smallmouth, and okay for largemouth. The Current below Pulltite works well smallmouth and Goggle-eye, and in the Van Buren area walleye fishing is pretty good, but you really won't find many trout below Akers, because they aren't ever stocked down there.
Members stream stalker Posted May 20, 2009 Members Posted May 20, 2009 I'd recommend The Dry Bean. We always make at least one appearance there anytime we are in Eminence. It's always been a good time.--SS
