ozark trout fisher Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 I'm planning to try to fish every Missouri trout stream this summer, and Hickory is the one I know least about. So, I got a few questions What baits/lures/flies would you reccommend? Does it have a good trout populations? Does the fishing hold up into the summer? If anyone could answer these questions, I would really appreciate it.
ollie Posted May 28, 2009 Posted May 28, 2009 1. I jig fish only for trout so I can't help you out there. 2. No, it doesn't have a real "good" trout population unless you can beat the bucket brigrade and the nationals who sein the stream. 3. Depends when in the summer you are talking about. Late July and August the water levels get really low and there isn't much cover for them then. 4. Drop me a line when you want to go and maybe I can show you around. If you decide to come in late July bring some gloves and you can help with the litter pick-up! "you can always beat the keeper, but you can never beat the post" There are only three things in life that are certain : death, taxes, and the wind blowing at Capps Creek!
Buzz Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 Hey Ollie, have you heard if they are going to stock for the 4th of July like last year???? I had a blast. If fishing was easy it would be called catching.
Chief Grey Bear Posted May 29, 2009 Posted May 29, 2009 The best "secret" I think is knowing where the holes are that will still hold a trout or two that haven't been put in the freezer. Give anyone of us three a call and we can put you on some fish. Like Ollie said, it won't be huge numbers of fish but we can help help you find a few. Sounds kinda tough, but oh well. I might try to go down early/mid june, and try to combine it with Capps, Crane and Roaring River, maybe one day for each. That would be four I'd could check off my list.
Hopper Posted May 30, 2009 Posted May 30, 2009 I've fished from spring street bridge(where helicopter static display is) down to the vacant two story white house, this seems to the most productive stretch. My most productive flies have been olive woolly buggers #6 thru 12 with beadhead and conehead, pheasant tails #12 thru #16, and brown leach patterns. I've caught fish all summer long even with kids swimming near by. good luck The gods do not deduct from man's allotted span the hours spent in fishing.
Members purefish Posted June 4, 2009 Members Posted June 4, 2009 Fishing on Hickory is still good right now. We were down Tuesday evening and caught 11 between my self and a buddy. Work the holes over good and don't be afraid to throw near root wads and other (actual) trash. Most of the fish still in there didn't stay by being out in the open. I am a jig only guy as well so I can't help you on fly selection. Let me know for sure on the clean up and I will try to come down and help.
