Recommended Posts

So i finally made it to colorado and am working for the caddis company/Durango Orvis. The baetis have been c oming off for the last 2 weeks and the trouties have been gorging themselvs. if anyone has any helpful suggestions for me on the San Juan please feel free to help me out cause im sure gonna need it especially with flies, areas to fish. i have only fished the braids up to the cable. sand hole always has too many people...(reminds me of home on taney most days). but please feel free to help me out cause most of my guide trips will be wade trips on the san juan.

ps, if you are gonna head out this way and want a partner to fish with, look me up in Durango or pm me and let me know you are coming

Marabou jigs are DEADLY on the SJ... you could start something out there if you out-catch the guides using them.

My daughter will be out at Kanakuk Colorado again in May/June. If we go out to visit, I'll give you a call.

There is so much quality water out there.. I am sure the crowds will stay upstream moreso and you can find some good big water downstream.

If you havent walked thru the woods towards the bluff bank across from where you park to get to the braids.. you need to. That is some big fish holding water that it seemed like locals keep very quiet.

I found lots of fish in very unsuspecting places that were eagers feeders on the SJ.. it really was a dream come true to get to even fish that water. Kepp your bugs small.. 22's and under. Do not forget to fish your really dumb big stuff that most people arent throwing. Use heavy tippet.. check your notes really good. Carry a big net :P

enjoy your summer - Brian

Brian Shaffers WD-40s work very well. Also gray and brown scuds in size 18. Beware of the shops out there as they seem to want to sell you a variety of flies that the guides may not use.

The prime flies seem to be related to midges and scuds.
