OKFlyFisher44 Posted June 10, 2009 Author Posted June 10, 2009 If you got hooked on catching a few at night wait til you have one of those 50+ fish nights! I see you are from Oklahoma around my area. I usually make at least 2 trips a month to Branson (wifes business) and fish almost entirely at night. Send me a PM next time you plan to go and maybe we can meet up at the dam. I will be there this weekend fishing Saturday and Sunday nights. F2F F2F, where in Oklahoma you at? I can't imagine a 50+ fish trip at NIGHT...that'd be awesome! I really think I wasn't fishing BIG enough bugs to be honest, or I think I'd caught more fish. But maybe the fishing was just off. The stuff I was using was like #10 and #12 buggers and mohairs. I'm thinking I need bigger...I had some big nasty egg-sucking leech patterns in the box but I never got around to throwing them! I'm thinking I might take my 7-wt rod next time and throw some really big nasty bugs at them. My 4-wt Scott doesn't throw the big heavy stuff very well.... F2F, I'm going to TRY and go back to missouri the last weekend of June for some fishing. But I probably won't fish Taney till sunday night because I'm planning on going to the Current saturday afternoon when I get off work, fish there all day sunday and then head to Taney that night. But who knows...just see how it plays out! Chance ...I'm haunted in my dreams of waters I have yet to fish and trout I have yet to catch... Chasing the Dream...

Yes at night you need to upsize, I throw a size 6 & 8 PMS and pine squirrels on a 4wt Sage without much problem. You can also go with a 6-8lb. leader at night. I am making a quick trip this weekend because we had reserved a condo at Big Cedar for my wifes cousin and his wife and now they can't go so we decided to use it ourselves. Just talked to Leonard and he is tying something that he says needs a 7 or 8 wt to throw it, I am up for that just put a new Loomis 8wt reel on my old Heddon 8wt rod

Are you the same Henry that used to hang around Hugh Daniel? If so, I think we know each other, as I am married to Hugh and Peggy's youngest daughter, Liz. Dave Cook Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 Using your 4wt and size 10 & 12 woolies/leeches on a full moon night is a good strategy. You need a slow enough retrieve for them to hit the bottom. If you are doing that, then you will get lots of strikes. Now for fishing the 7wt or 8wt and the #6 PMS - you bet-cha. I like to do both. But you can fish the PMS just fine on a 5wt or 6wt. If you want to stick with the 4wt, just try tying some #8 PMS's and use at least a 4x tippet. I know you fish with Zack on the Lower Illinois but do you fish the upper part and Barron Fork any for smallies?

I do fish the Upper Illinois and have not yet fished the Barron Fork, although my Dad and Brother have. I floated the Upper last weekend from the Chewey Bridge down to the Riverside Resort takeout. It was the worst fishing that I have ever had on that stretch of river. I think I caught 10 fish. 2 were carp and the rest were small smallies. tippett7 Posted June 10, 2009 Posted June 10, 2009 Leonard, I can't believe a little rain would scare you away from night fishing. There's nothing like holding a 9 foot rod in the air waiting for lightning to strike you down. Come one live a little.

I live in Mannford and work in Tulsa myself. We definitely need to meet up sometime and do some fishing. I only have 1 fishing partner that actually uses the fly stick that lives close by but he's got a busy schedule so usually I'm flying solo on most fishing trips! Guess it isn't so bad though...I enjoy solitude My 4-wt throws the stuff fine...just gives you a work-out by the end of the night and my 5-wt is a 7'6 mid-flex action rod so it doesn't have much of a back-bone for throwing big stuff and god knows I'm not trying it on my 6'6 3-wt My 7-wt throws it effortlessly though. I do go to 4x at night as well. I'm definitely going to tie up some PMSs in the bigger sizes along with stealing a few of my bigger wooly buggers out of my bass fly box in my other pack...take those too! I'll also make a point to throw those bigger egg-sucking leech patterns I had too. Chance ...I'm haunted in my dreams of waters I have yet to fish and trout I have yet to catch... Chasing the Dream...
