fly2fish Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 The Baxter Bulletin reports 3 dead and 2 injured. The plane apparently barely was airborne before crashing through the fence at the end of the runway and into some trees. A person that saw the plane being loaded thought they might be overloading it with 5 people and a lot of luggage. Have to check the density altitude on hot humid days. Thoughts and prayers to the families. F2F
G-ROD Posted June 26, 2009 Posted June 26, 2009 I am devastated........ One of the 15 year old boys that died in this crash was a baseball player I had on my team for the last 3 years. He was a very good young man and friend of my sons and the rest of the team. Our phones are ringing off the hook. Jake had just finished his freshman year at SLUH. We will miss you Jake!!!!!!!!! -------------------- Mo Smallmouth Hunter Gary
zsmith62 Posted June 27, 2009 Posted June 27, 2009 Just read in the Springfield paper that there has been at least five crashes at the gaston's runway since 1997. You would think that the FAA, NTSB or somebody would demand some kind of change to be made with that kind of a record. Just thought that was an alarming statistic. My condolences go to out to all of those involved as well. Zach Smith
RSBreth Posted June 28, 2009 Posted June 28, 2009 Just read in the Springfield paper that there has been at least five crashes at the gaston's runway since 1997. You would think that the FAA, NTSB or somebody would demand some kind of change to be made with that kind of a record. Just thought that was an alarming statistic. 5 crashes in more than 10 years isn't too bad for a VFR type grass airfield. There isn't a tower, and there is only one route in and out, due to power lines on the west side of the property. Have you ever been down there? If you see it, you'll understand. Plenty of room, but light aircraft pilots are really on their own to make decisions, kind of like driving a car. Speaking of driving, have you seen the statistics for some of the intersections in "Springberg"? I drive by the worst one 5 times a week. Campbell&Republic Road Crash Frequency Tops List Lucky I'm not dead yet. I feel so sorry for the families.
zsmith62 Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 Okay, that makes a little more sense now, I obviously haven't been down there, but the way you describe it helps. Don't even get me started on Springfield drivers/traffic! What a mess... Zach Smith
