Members cgoff Posted June 29, 2009 Members Posted June 29, 2009 I'm new to smallmouth fishing and so far not doing so well on the Piney. I have managed to catch enough to keep my interest but theyhave been small. I have had the most luck on beetle spins with 3" gulp minnows fishing the backside of pools. Any tips on what lures to use or type of water to fish would be greatly appreciated. I'm strictly a catch and release fisherman, so they will still be thier for you to catch.

Try fishing in the pools right below the riffles and rapids anytime of the day. 2-4 inch natural color tubes(gitzits) green pumpkin, copper, etc when the sun is high in the sky and concentrate more this time of year in the evenings with rapala minnows or spinner baits. thats a good start theres so many techniques that can work. If u need more help u can e-mail me at hookem777@yahoo.com I'll help anyway i can. Darrell Darrell B

Gavin Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 Depends if they are active or not...If they are active, they will go for buzzbaits, walk the dog type plugs, tiny torpedo's, or pop-R's...If they are less active try a floating rapala, suspending jerkbait, fluke, or a 1/4 oz spinnerbait...no action on any of the above fish plastics on the bottom. Focus on areas with some current, wood, chunk rock or boulders, and willow weed. Bigger baits usually do better for the big fish..mainly buzzers, walk the dog plugs, largemouth sized spinnerbaits, flukes or rapalas in the 5" range, or a big jig and chunk. Cheers.
Members cgoff Posted June 30, 2009 Author Members Posted June 30, 2009 Went out this morning for a couple of hours and picked up 5 small mouth and one spot on a crawdad colored crankbait. Nothing big but it was still fun
