Brian K. Shaffer Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 Long time no write - so here goes : If you havent noticed, Japanese beetles have invaded the upper end by the gazillions! A standard foam beetle will do the trick - or you can try the coffee bean beetle. Aside from fishing beetles, Jassids and other leaf type beetle patterns are working well too. Not to mention hoppers, crickets, ANTS and even cicada patterns are doing well. Try a 9ft 5X leader with 2 foot of 6X added. Size 14-16-18 Foam black beetle. * Splat * the bug down in front of risers and even wiggle it a little to get attention. Have fun - try something new - terrestrial flies on Taneycomo sure do work! ( plenty of over 20inch fish would agree.. they hate to agree.. but they will ) Cheers, tight lines and screaming reels - Brian Shaffer Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.
Leonard Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 Hey Brian A couple nights ago when Tippet7 and I was out.. He hook a nice little rainbow and notice something in it mouth... It looked like a foam fly at first... But reading this I remember what you showed me the other day... It was a coffee bean...... BTW.. It was good seeing you out there..Enjoyed the chat.. Lets catch up again another time... maybe one of the really dark cloudy nights.. maybe we can get a reel to "scream" for mercy!! Leonard PS.. where can I get a few coffee beans? http://www.taneycomonights.com
Brian K. Shaffer Posted June 29, 2009 Author Posted June 29, 2009 ANY place that grinds up coffee will give you a bean or 50. You do have to pick thru them good to find the better ones. Size 14-16-18 hook, thread base and some peacock wrapped up. Super glue is the trick to getting them to stay on. (try Gorilla Super Glue) Add a dot of color to see it better and coat with Sally Hansens Hard As Nails. Pick good beans that aint gonna split on ya! Good to see you on the water too Leonard. Your scuplin looked quite edible. cheers, tight lines and screaming reels - Brian Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.
zsmith62 Posted June 29, 2009 Posted June 29, 2009 Some of the funnest fishing I've ever had was last summer throwin out a hopper pattern at Taney. I would have to say if I had my choice of any way to fly fish, it would definately be fishing with terrestrials. There's just something about watching a trout rise to a big ol' dry fly. Zach Smith
Brian K. Shaffer Posted July 25, 2009 Author Posted July 25, 2009 Beetles and ants are still a hot ticket for dry fly fishing on Taney. The Japanese beetles should be this thick thru Sept. Has anyone given this a try lately ? cheers, Brian Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted July 25, 2009 Root Admin Posted July 25, 2009 I need to get out and try them. Brian- you need to come over and show me how to tie the bean. BTY- I asked MDC about the bean being legal in the trophy area... no response so I guess they're ok.
Danoinark Posted July 26, 2009 Posted July 26, 2009 The coffee bean beetle fly....Dano http://about-flyfishing.com/library/weekly/aa073102a.htm Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"

Or when the water is rising, so do the trout. Look at my 7-09 report. The only good line is a tight line
Gallagher Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 Here's a few Coffee Bean bugs I made recently, but have yet to give 'em a try. Carry out what you carry in...
Micheal Kyle Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 I have thought about this all weekend if this is legal above Fall Creek or not. So I called the MDC regional supervisor and he said that he would interpret the law as this the coffee bean is a natural grown substance so there for it would be illegal. We both joked about how it would be like tying a piece of corn on a hook with some feathers. This for Fall creek up to the wire. Below fall creek it would be legal. Just my thoughts.
