Gallagher Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 I've tried using the search feature but can't seem to locate any info on units running & being able to wade. I figure probably 0-1 to be able to wade, 1-2 might be questionable depending the local...? If anyone could give a "heads up" on water flow from generation units whereas it's still wadeable I greatly appreciate it! Thanks in advance. Carry out what you carry in...
OKFlyFisher44 Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 We fished with 1 unit this weekend and it was still wade-able but really just on the edges...it gets deep really quick. But there's a lot of fish still to be caught around the edges. And you can always fish at the outlets with the masses....if you can squeeze in! Chance ...I'm haunted in my dreams of waters I have yet to fish and trout I have yet to catch... Chasing the Dream...
Fly_Guy Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 One unit is about all I'll wade in. two or more I'll be at the outlets with the masses and the big trout. I don't know if trout relate to structure at all, but I waded waist deep with one unit or two (fast flow anyway) on a hot sunny day lately, and caught 14 trout floating a san juan past a group of rocks in about 6 feet of water. I would suggest looking for areas that will be shallow and are casting distance from some sort of structure (rock or stump or big drop off) when there is no generation. That's what I did - found an area that I was able to get out a ways, down round the rebar hole. I am wondering how trout relate to structure (in a related thread), and if breaks in current like this are more likely to actually hold fish in heavy current. Or do trout continually prowl like a walleye would?
Members jefly77 Posted June 30, 2009 Members Posted June 30, 2009 With 1 or 2 units running and the tailwater at about 704 or lower, you can wade all over the gravel bar by outlet 3 with the exception of a few deep spots. I advise caution to anyone who is not extremely familiar with that area and not in reasonably good shape because the current really gets strong once you get up to about mid-thigh. At the same level, you can wade out pretty far above outlet 1, on the flats between 1 and 2, and even right by 2. Also, down by the old KOA where the river turns to the southside of the big island you can wade out in that area pretty good too. I actually prefer a little bit of running water in that area. No matter what, be careful and only wade where you are comfortable. It has taken me the better part of a year to really feel like I know where and when I can and can't wade.
Gallagher Posted June 30, 2009 Author Posted June 30, 2009 Great information guy's, thanks! I'll only wade in what I'm comfortable with & always keeping in mind being able to get back safely. Carry out what you carry in...
