Gallagher Posted June 30, 2009 Posted June 30, 2009 I went to Delaware Town for the first time today just to look around at what it had to offer. I had to look real hard too! And quite honestly,... I couldn't find much. If someone can clue me in as to what this place has to offer that'd be fine. To me the whole area just looked nasty! As I drove by the first turn out area (boat ramp), I didn't see much so I proceeded to the second area, again, all I saw was one little trail through the tall weeds that led down to the river which was so slow moving it almost looked stagnant. On to the boat ramp area, again didn't see anything appealing to me at all there either. One thing that did catch my eye was the posted sign stating the condition of water samples from there contained unacceptable amounts a e-coliform so, NO SWIMMING / WADING. I seriously doubt that I'll go back. Disappointed, Carry out what you carry in...
Predator1 Posted July 6, 2009 Posted July 6, 2009 Gallagher, We usually put our canoes in at Delaware town and float down to Shelvin Rock. When the water level is down it looks like that. However, there are lots of nice fish through out the float. Charles
Cajunangler Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 I agree with you. It just looks and from the sign you saw, is nasty. I'd suggest finding another, cleaner river to fish. Good Luck!
Don Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 Gallagher, As you may know, I only have a 5 mile drive to the James. In my younger days, I hit it rather frequently and had several camp trips just downstream from Delaware on private land....no more. Anyway, I just can't get excited about getting into the James anymore. The Springfield area population boom in the last 20-30 years has contributed many " nutrients" to the river and Table Rock as well. Grant that there are some nice smallies in the James, it would make a good and float for warm water species. However, think about it next time you drive across Wilson Creek on James River Freeway and take a good whiff. Springfield's water supply comes from Stockton; Springfield's sewage flows to Table Rock. Don May I caught you a delicious bass.
RSBreth Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 If every one would quit fishing the James that would be sweet. So spread the word. More big Smallmouth for me.
Flysmallie Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 If every one would quit fishing the James that would be sweet. So spread the word. More big Smallmouth for me. Yeah I saw turd floating down there last week. Stay away from the James. Me & RSBreth will let you know when it's safe.
zander Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 It may not always look like the most pristine Ozark water out there, but in places it can either look really bad (Delaware Town) or really nice (Taylor Shoals). I live about 1 1/2 miles from the James and I like it. you have rock structure, logs, holes, riffles, gravel bars and some really neat natural features and history. I may want to moderate the amount of fish I eat of out it, but you could say that about everywhere else now as well. That being said I have never seen a 6-legged coon (mutagens) or one that needed breast reduction surgery (hormones from sewage) walking around and they eat stuff out of there exclusively.
smallmouthjoe Posted July 8, 2009 Posted July 8, 2009 Zander, I disagree with you on the subect of geneically mutated animals due to the tons of raw sewage being dumped into The James. Just look at the picture of the 5lb smallie posting under this one. All the other smallmouth I've caught, or seen, from other streams have been so small and malnourished. This one, and all the other four and five pounders swimming in that River have to be mutated freaks. That or because they are smallmouth living the high life in a stable and rich ecosystem. I don't know, I'm just glad their there and I'm happy to hear about any fishermen that refuses to catch them.
Guest csfishinfool Posted July 9, 2009 Posted July 9, 2009 Yeah I saw turd floating down there last week. Stay away from the James. Me & RSBreth will let you know when it's safe. [/quo I think alot of people have a huge mis conseption of the James River. While there is treatment plants that dump into it. The real problem is yard waste, motor oil, pestisides, law fertalizers that all go down the storm drains. Mix that with the James' slow pace in the summer , miles of cow crap loaded pastures and you get some nasty stagnit water. But the fishing still kicks butt. It nothing to do a six mile float and catch 60 fish.
Wheatenheimer Posted July 10, 2009 Posted July 10, 2009 Yeah I saw turd floating down there last week. Stay away from the James. Me & RSBreth will let you know when it's safe. That's funny I think I spotted that same turd at Roaring River not too long ago, but it was stuffed into a pair of Simm's waders! I find it ironic that due to the double posting you have elevated yourself to a "Brown Trout"!!!!!! But then look at me.............I'm a Bigmouth Buffalo!!!!
