Members ducksbit Posted July 2, 2009 Members Posted July 2, 2009 Looking at the gages, the meramec is a good amount over the 80th % and will be for tomorrow for sure. My question is does this really mattter since this has been a year with heay rain? And because the 80 % is an average from years past. Should i just go to the Gasconade instead? Thanks in advance. Jim

Jim Jim, As far as river levels go, the river is still up a bit from normal summer low flows. You didn’t mention many factors. Are you jet boating? Canoeing? Wading? What area do you plan to go to? Popular sections of the river will be log jammed with floaters! This is a holiday weekend dude, party time. All the people will be out in force, and the law. July 4th holidays are good for entertainment, in my humble opinion. Not for serious fishing. If you’re looking for a party, I’d go. Otherwise you might want water the back yard, and wait for another time, or look for a private lake or something… just a suggestion… Good Luck, Bman The only good line is a tight line
Gavin Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 The Steelville Guage is at 476cfs which is close to my max for wading below the park in the Cardiac area..it will still be difficult to cross in most spots if your on foot, but it should be fine for canoeing. Dont expect any solitude this weekend unless your headed up above Hwy 8. Cheers.
hank franklin Posted July 2, 2009 Posted July 2, 2009 Agree w/ Gavin. River is a bit high for wading in trout area. Middle and lower river ought to be in excellent shape.
Members ducksbit Posted July 2, 2009 Author Members Posted July 2, 2009 I will be in my jet boat and I plan on going tomorrow morning. I get on the water at 6:ooam and only go upstream about 5 miles then float back. Thats the only time I run the boat. I'm thinking of putting in at meramec state park, but I'm not sure yet. I'll be off the water before noon. Thanks Jim

Thanks Jim I'm thinking about taking my jet sled out as well. I will be around Pacific. Water is up enough to make it easy running. Water near the state park http://waterdata.usgs.gov/nwis/uv?07014500 Have a great holiday, and be safe! The only good line is a tight line
Members ducksbit Posted July 2, 2009 Author Members Posted July 2, 2009 I think fishing should be decent, but if it isn't its always better than work. Happy 4th everyone, be safe and have fun. Jim
Members jgentile Posted July 3, 2009 Members Posted July 3, 2009 I waded the Meramec today from the park down to Dry Fork. The river is slightly dingy and even though the numbers look good it is still a bit high. I'm only 5' 9" and I had to tip toe a litlle but I managed. The current is fine, no problem crossing. I hit the river right before the siren rang and entered the river with two other anglers. Caught fish all the way down and back up. Soft hitting fish and quite few short hitters. All fish caught on white marabou jigs. Some on 1/16, most on a 1/32. Upstream casts with a good drift was the ticket. Fish were holding as deep as they could/ 12 Rainbow, 4 Brown, 4 Smallies and 2 Sunfish. Biggest fish was 18". Nice to hit the Meramec again after a horrific Spring. One thing... If you are taking a boat down, prepare to portage a bit as the storms have wrecked havoc on the landscape. Tight lines, Joe
Bman Posted July 3, 2009 Posted July 3, 2009 Jim, How about your fishing report. Did you put in this morning and run up from Meramec State Park? How did it go? I got together with my kids/ grandkids this morning. I checked the ramp close to home and it was packed with trailers. I might sneak out for a bit this evening if the ramp clears up. We put in at Meramec state park at 7:00 am, ran up about 8 miles. Caught probably between 60-80 fish between 2 people. All were smallies except for 7 spotted bass, which were fried up that night and 5 largemouth that were released. With probably 10 goggle-eye. Biggest smallie was 16.5 and most were around 11-14 inches, and very healthy. All fish were either on jigs or soft plastics. Didn't have a single problem with canoes and got checked by the man at about 10 am. Very nice agents. All in all another great trip on the meramec. Jim
