Members hunter@heart
Four of us floated from Greer to Turner on Friday. We rented canoes from Eleven Point Canoe Rental. Got some good info from the guys at Eleven Point Canoe, some flies, and off to the river. Before we even got started good, we lost the top half of one of the flyrods. It got caught on a branch as we went under a overhanging branch and before we could get turned out of the current the line broke and the top half of the rod had come loose and fallen into the river. Deep slow run and we were unable to find it. Anyway, at the first stop between the four of us we caught about 18 rainbows. What a way to start the day!!!!! And it never really slowed down the rest of the day. I caught four at the first stop. All of us were using a different setup. I was using an egg pattern with a black w/ blue stone fly dropper. Another guy was using a Don's craw pattern. My brother was using an egg pattern with a brown stone fly dropper. Other guy was changing up quite a bit using switching between egg, Don's craw, stoneflies of various colors and big nymphs. I only caught one fish on the egg the whole day. Everything else was on the black w/ blue stonefly. Had to use alot of weight to get it deep. I was using a 3 wt and really struggled keeping the fish on when in the stronger current. I bet I let 12 or more fish off before I could lay my hands on them. I think next time I am going to take my 5 wt. Lost several very nice fish. Lots of hookups and lots of fights. I probably landed a dozen or more. My brother had the catch of the day in terms of number and size. He caught most of his on a brown stonefly pattern, but he also caught several on his egg. He was using more weight that I was and I am guessing that is why he was getting more hits on the egg. I believe his egg was getting deeper than mine was, but that is only speculation. I also had lots of fish chasing my stone fly as I was bringing it back in at the end of the run. I am guessing a big wooley booger would have produced fish. I caught several picking up the line at the end of the run. I watched several trout miss short and had one actually come out of the water after my stone fly as I was picking it up to recast. I don't have a exact fish count, but I feel pretty comfortable saying between the four of us we caught 40 to 50 rainbows. I was a great day on the river. Everytime I go, I can't believe I don't do it more often. I has been over a year since I have been on the river and I live less than an hour away. Just to give Brian's operation a plug, they are a great bunch of guys. They will help you out and give you information to help you catch fish. I used the setup I was told about by one of the guy's working for Brian and it produced fish for me all day. Great day, great river, can't wait to do it again. Matt I was on the river 7/10 too, although a different section. When I did Greer to Turner (7/8 I believe), I didn't catch nearly so many, so good job. I caught something like 15 rainbows in that stretch, so I'd say you did well.
2sheds
Thanks for the report, Matt. Glad you guys did so well. Heading out for my annual Eleven Point float in a few weeks and its good to know that the triple-jumbo-bead MOAT's I've tied this last off-season will get a workout. And I have to agree that Brian & Ryan run a great float/guide service !
Members hunter@heart
Just to give credit where it is due. Tito Degiosio that works at Eleven Point Canoe was the one who told me to use the egg pattern with a stonefly dropper and it really worked. Brian always gives good info as well, but I can say I never had to change up my flies except for moving my indicator and split shot every now and then. I appreciate the info Tito, it made for a great day of fishing. I didn't take a camera with me on this trip, but you can be sure I will next time I go. Members kslr10
Well, I'll be there Friday morning to get some stuff and shuttle to the river for the weekend. I'll need to get some fly fishing advice. Gonna give the fly rod a try this year. And Brian instead of 2 canoes, we'll only need 1. Had some guys back out. We still havent decided on Cane to Riverton or Greer to 142. I guess we'll figure it out on Friday mornin. unless you guys got some recommendations. Thanks. Members kslr10
Last year we went in early June from Cane to Riverton. The smallie action was great. We are targeting mostly smallies but a couple of us want to put some more time into the trout this year.
