How do I deal with those who ignore the 50 yard encroachment rule?......I show them just how accurate I am with a crank bait! rtj4bb.gif

3) Slack Line

Remember when you are fishing in over 80 plus feet of water your line should allways be perfect and straight. If for any reason there is slack in your line, the fish has it and is swimming up fast ( to get away from other fish in the school) (Next tip, if you do get this type of bite, stay there you have a pretty good school of fish below you!). Reel up the slack to the fish and set the hook once again straight up and start reeling.. Warning this is just about always the bigger fish make sure you have your drag set light, once they see the boat down they go fast!!

Once you get these three bites down your catches will go up alot!! Then once you get that one figured out it will be time for the spoon season, then that is a whole nother thing!!

Don,

I had this one happen to me on the trip I just got back from.

Was dropping in on them with a crawler, and I got bit on the drop... I was sitting there wondering why it hadnt bottomed out, so I started reeling and as soon as I got the slack out of it I knew I had a fish on, once I realized this... I was reeling as fast as I could trying to catch up to it, becasue it also seems that he was coming up... and fast!

I finally got some good tension on the line and set the hook then the fight began! We fought back and forth for a little bit and I was able to get the upper hand and had him close to the boat, got a good look at him and it was a nice fat Kentucky, Well I think when he saw the boat he got kinda pissed off and took off again and tested my drag, but after a short battle I got him back up at which point I grabbed the net and swung it over the side and that must have REALLY pissed him off because he made one final thrash and BOOM he was gone.

Obviously I didnt get the hook set real good so now that Ive learned that lesson... next time I will set the hook at least twice!

mclothier, I don't think it was your hook set, it was your drag! First step is to loosen your drag!! I mean loose!!! Should be able to pull out line with easy but still takes a light tug to release line. That stops those last ditch digs!!! Happens to me all of the time, this stopped it..

Ahhh... that very well could have been the problem. Ill have to give it a shot.

I hate the ones that shake a hook down deep where you dont even get a look at him, at least I got a real good look at this one!

My brother and I went drop shoting for Kenntuckies yesterday for the first time. We caught several on the crawler, most right at keeper size with a few a little bigger. We did manage a couple on the finesse worm but we had a couple of questions about fishing them.

First, what is our choice color?

Second, when you feel the bite or your line goes slack, do you immeditely set the hook, or do you give a little slack and then set the hook(more like texas rigged worm fishing)? We were having a hard time hooking up with the artificial worms.

Last, how do you rig your finesse worm on the hook?

Thanks.

ALL of the suggestions are good. I have my best luck on Zoom Finesse Worms in Cotton Candy color. Good luck and have fun.
