smallmouthjoe Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 Fished The James from Delaware up today. Fished to the old bridge then back down. Caught a nice collection of fish: some decent smallmouth and largemouth, a few little spots, a few rock bass and one really nice walleye. The last fish that I hooked was a two to three foot gar. She pulled me around for about twenty seconds then jumped out of the water a full foot above my head and threw the crank she hit. I was happy to have my crankbait back even if it was a little mangled. Most of the nice fish came on a bandit 200 in brown craw, all the rest of my fish where caught on a 1/8 once spring craw bitsy bug with a paca craw on the back. All the smallies where caught off of wood with a good amount of water moving past them and all the largemouth where caught off of wood in slack water.
TroutRinger Posted July 17, 2009 Posted July 17, 2009 Can you wade there or do you have to have a boat of some sort? "Of all the liars among mankind, the fisherman is the most trustworthy." "There's a fine line between fishing and standing on the shore like an idiot."
smallmouthjoe Posted July 18, 2009 Author Posted July 18, 2009 You can wade it but there is a no swimming sign up. If you do wade it about a half mile up there is a really big and deep run that would be really difficult to get around. I fished from my kayak today and got out and waded when i could.
Danoinark Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 Nice report Joe, very concise. Thanks. Dano Glass Has Class "from the laid back lane in the Arkansas Ozarks"
RSBreth Posted July 18, 2009 Posted July 18, 2009 A crankbait catching fish in the James? Say it isn't so... Sorry, just being sarcastic. Good report. Another Walleye on the crank get's me thinking about a fish fry...
smallmouthjoe Posted July 19, 2009 Author Posted July 19, 2009 Another Walleye on the crank get's me thinking about a fish fry... That's exactly what I thought while I was holding her. I was thinking about maybe going there sometime and keeping a few of the walleyes and goggleyes, but I've never eaten fish from any river I don't know what to expect. Someone told me that river fish taste different.
RSBreth Posted July 20, 2009 Posted July 20, 2009 Every Walleye I've ate from river or lake tasted about the same to me- delicious.
