Daveinozark Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 went to Springfield lake Sun morning in the fog. Did some shore fishing by the power plant and didn't get a thing. The water was really thick, seems too polluted for fish. About a dozen other people were out there and no one was catching anything on the shore. Anyone else shore fish there with success?
et84 Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 I'm assuming you were below the dam, at the spillover. You're right- the look (and smell) of the water can be very offputting, but CU manages and tests the water down there all the time. I think the biggest problem is low oxygen levels which I THINK is caused by the power plant using the lake as a cooling source, making the water MUCH warmer below the dam. I could be wrong, though. The lake is pretty close to the city, which points to tons of other pollutants. Despite all this I have caught lots of fish down there, more at night than in the morning. Below the dam holds a little bit of everything, but gar are very plentiful, as they require MUCH LESS oxygen than other fish. Check out this article from MDC on making a lure for these prehistoric beasts. Gar Article "Sometimes it seems like such a hard life, but there's good times around the bend. The rollercoaster's gotta roll to the bottom if ya wanna climb to the top again."
Daveinozark Posted July 27, 2009 Author Posted July 27, 2009 yeah I was on that metal fishing pier but there were a few guys trying in that overflow pool. There was a gross concotion floating in there so I wasn't interested in catching anything out of there. That's an interesting article on the Gar though, don't have that in my tackle box yet. Think I'll stick with Finley and James for some early morning weekends for now, see if I get kicked off that golf course or not.
et84 Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 Sounds like a plan. I don't want to talk bad about Springfield Lake, but it's my last choice for a reason. If you're willing to drive more than 15 mins., go somewhere else. "Sometimes it seems like such a hard life, but there's good times around the bend. emjay Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 springfield lake is not too bad. i just go there to kill time. i've caught many nice bass there. its a little crowded but most people dont know how to fish the lake. most than 90% of the people there are just putting a worm or something on a hook and waiting. i usually just go there just to test out my new lures.
Ämp Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 that is the james btw.. be respectful at river cut , I wouldnt want them to have any reason to throw up a no fishing sign. .
Daveinozark Posted July 28, 2009 Author Posted July 28, 2009 no worries, I just meant getting kicked out for trespassing is all
Ämp Posted July 28, 2009 Posted July 28, 2009 they never give me any trouble but I make sure to leave no trash , if im standing next to some on the ground even though its not mine I pick it up. I also stay far from view , down on the bank off the greens or fairways. just the river. .
Dutch Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 Spfld lake isn't a bad place to bank fish. Try the other side away from the people.
Members Dan052 Posted July 29, 2009 Members Posted July 29, 2009 I've heard so many good things about below the dam. I've heard of people reeling in 7-9 pound bass out of that little hole...... I was down there one time with an ultra light rod, just messing around and got tangled into some fish that almost immediately broke my line. I'm assuming it was a gar. I have seen a couple of decent fish pulled out of there, but have yet to catch anything worth bragging about... not that I fish it that often.
