Flippin Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 A buddy and was trying to figure out what Pomme de Terre means. We figure it is French for something but now sure what it means. Does anyone know?
zander Posted July 27, 2009 Posted July 27, 2009 apple of the earth, it is what the french call potato
Flippin Posted July 29, 2009 Author Posted July 29, 2009 Thanks Zander. Seems like an odd name for a lake.
Wayne SW/MO Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 It was named after the river. The original pronouncation, or the one I always heard locally was Pomme Da "Tar". I believe the proper one is Pomme De "Tear" Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
zander Posted July 29, 2009 Posted July 29, 2009 I am guessing here, but more than likely the river was named because the French traders saw a lot of Indians digging prairie turnips in the bottoms around the river. They would have also referred to these as "pommes de terre" since it was close to what they knew from France.
