tippet7 Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 on the pan-mysis shrimp, red thread midge SMALL(20-24) if you get lucky and hit a hatch, small BWOs, green drakes, griffiths gnats and adams. make sure they are SMALL and your tippet is small as well. 7 or 8x with long leaders. fish in the pan are as big as engine blocks on a buick, but very spooky. almost forgot-on the pan fish the area known as the toilet bowl. it is the outflow from the dam, big churny water, but there are PIGS in there. i had very very very good luck using an RS2 on a small split shot, with a strike indicator about 7 or 8 feet above the fly. be ready for MASSIVE hits in there and be ready to lose some flies but be rewarded with big fish. good luck- i really miss fishing the pan! You are so stupid you threw a rock at the ground and missed.
flyfishmaster Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 Murdoc, I recently had a great PM with Paloa Cat about fishing in CO. He is heading to the Dillion area in a few weeks. As far your trip to the Dream Stream, 11 Mile Canyon and "The Pan" goes, I think I can help. I have been to each of these streams 8 times or more. So send me a PM and I will give you a detail listing of flies you should have with you. Later, FFM Woo Hoo Fish On!!

flyfishmaster Posted August 11, 2009 Posted August 11, 2009 Well for all you sitting at the edge of chairs waiting to see the list, here it is. I do except royalites for each fish catch using these flies. Well here is the list of flies that I use with success. There are other flies that will catch the fish, but here are the “go to” flies: First fishing a double rigs is best to cover different water columns. Okay, one of the top producing flies in all these streams is the SZ 20/22 Mercury Pheasant Tail. This flies have accounted for a few hundred fish throughout the 8 years of fishing our there between 3 of us fishing. As for as Spinney “the Dream Stream”, : • If you are fishing any riffle section, put on a SZ 16 San Juan Worm. When fishing the edges, seams or drops use one of these: • SZ 20/22 Mercury Pheasant Tail • SZ 20 Sparkle Wing or Mercury RS2 • SZ 22 WD40 • SZ 20 Black Zebra Midge • SZ 20 Buckskin, look out on AO Forum and do search for it. I have posted the picture and recipe. One the simples fly ever to tie. • If it is late in the fall, use micro sized Glo Balls in Peach or orange. Drys: • SZ 20-24 Trico Spinners • SZ 20 Adams • SZ 22 Bunny Dun 11 Mile Canyon has some great fishing up by the dam (if you can find a place to fish), otherwise at the second tunnel pull over and go down the steep embankment. There is excellent fishing in this section. • SZ 20 Sparkle Wing or Mercury RS2 • SZ 20/22 Mercury Pheasant Tail • SZ 22 WD40 • SZ 20 Black Zebra Midge • SZ 20 Buckskin, • SZ 20 Golden Hares Ear • Sz 18 Jujube Drys: • SZ 20-24 Trico Spinners • SZ 20 Adams • SZ 22 Bunny Dun • Plus the Missouri favorite “Crackleback” . It works awesome out west. Please inform me of the other river/streams you want to hit; here are some of my favs: Blue River - Breckenridge Blue River - Silverthorne Blue River - Green Mtn Colorado - Parshall Williams Fork – Parshall (personal favorite) Frying Pan – Basalt Roaring River – Basalt/Glenwood Springs South Platte – Deckers / Trumbull Later, FFM Woo Hoo Fish On!!

I'd really suggest getting a hold of Pat Dorsey http://www.bluequillangler.com/ I've fished with Pat a couple of times and all I can say is Pat and any of the other guides he uses or suggest are TOP Notch. Pat is just a great guy and has so much info on the South Platte system -- you'll just pick up all kinds of info. The folks at Cutthroat Angles in Silverthorne are OK too. Good luck on the trip Thighlines & Singing Reels
podum Posted August 12, 2009 Posted August 12, 2009 Last week on the Lake Fork of the Gunnison the stone flies were thick and there was a great hopper bite. The hopper bite should last into the fall. I wish I had more time more than I wish I had more money.
