TroutBum4wt Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 I'm thinking about visiting Arthur Bryant's orginal restuarant at 1727 Brooklyn Ave in KCMO. Is the BBQ good? Any other suggestions on KC BBQ spots. Thanks! "Where There Are Trout, There's Hope" - John Gierach
ness Posted August 14, 2009 Posted August 14, 2009 It's good, but not great IMHO. Bryant's will have the celebrity photos on the wall, and you can have the satisfaction of eating where they all did. Nixon, Clinton, Emeril, whoever. There are a lot of very good BBQ restaurants in KC, so it's hard to just recommend one. Others I like: Oklahoma Joe's, Jack's Stack, Hayward's, RC's, Gates. John

Any other suggestions on KC BBQ spots. Thanks! Arthur Bryant's is a very unique style and generally people really love it or really don't like it. The original sauce almost has a gritty texture from the chili powder in it that turns some people off. I am in the camp that loves it though. I lived in KC in the late 80s/early 90s, but now live in Oklahoma. My mother in law lives there and I pretty much have to go to AB whenever we go to visit. The ribs are really good slathered with the sauce. The brisket or pork sandwiches are also really good and huge. Another really unique BBQ place I used to really like when I lived in KC is Rosedale's on SW blvd. Their sauce had some unique spices. Gates is also pretty popular and there are several of them around town. Probably my least favorite of the well known places was KC Masterpiece as that always came across to me as somewhat generic tasting.

KCRIVERRAT Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 Ness covered most of the BBQ joints. If you really want Bryant's, don't use the original sauce like djames said. Use their sweet sauce. That's what KC is famous for. Original is like he said... gritty and vinegar based. LC's off of I-435 and Eastwood Trafficway is awesome. If you're north of the river, Smokehouse BBQ on N. Oak Traffickway has awesome ribs. Now here is where I don't agree with djames, KC Masterpiece makes the best sauce... EVER! KC BBQ is about the sauce, not the meat. The meat's easy... unless you're from Texas! You'll eat well at any of these joints. They've all got websites probably... KC HUMAN RELATIONS MANAGER @ OZARK FISHING EXPEDITIONS

KC In my mind, the problem with KC Masterpiece sauce is that you can get about 5 varieties of KC Masterpiece sauce at pretty much any grocery store in the US or at least in the midwest. Hence, to me it really isn't a unique place I would make a point of visiting if I was in KC for a weekend. Obviously, lots of people like it though because they sell millions of bottles of it. I do agree with your comment that pretty much all of these places are pretty good. If you do go to Bryant's, you gotta at least try the original sauce- it's what made them famous. I have to say that the first time I tried it, I didn't like it, but then I tried it again and it started to grow on me. Now it is a craving thing. To kind of get my fix, I bring home several bottles of sauce whenever I go to KC now.
KCRIVERRAT Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 dgames... sorry about misspelling your handle. You're right, it's fun to try everything up here in KC when it comes to BBQ. So many different styles, but, only when it comes to sauces. This ain't a dry rub town like Memphis. Texas is a joke. North Carolina can pull my pork! Gates and Bryants were here long before KC Masterpiece came on to the scene. We Kansas Citians quickly learned what a true "Masterpiece" we had. Good fishing my friend... rps Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 Sorry guys. Dry rub rules. See the BBQ threads in the recipe section and add sauce, in small amounts, after the cooking.
am4mu Posted August 15, 2009 Posted August 15, 2009 I agree that if you have never been to the original Bryants it is worth at least one trip. My experience with the original sauce is that you either love it or hate it. I am in the love it camp. As far as the rest of the places mentioned I also agree that they are all good, however I have never tried the KC Masterpiece restraunt. I have not found any bad barbeque in KC just some a little better than others. Gates is kind of a must see stop in KC. Oklahoma Joe's is also very good. You could eat barbeque every day in KC and not hit all of the barbeque places in probably two months. Enjoy, Doug Kiefer Doug Kiefer Independence, Mo h: am4mu@comcast.net w: dougk@schulzetool.com
Members RedRaider n EagleRock Posted August 16, 2009 Members Posted August 16, 2009 The best bbq is the original Oklahoma Joes in the gas station i think its at 44th and mission. Great sandwichs, get the zman and fries ( the fries are unbelievable and a huge portion ). Jack Stack on 95th and metcalf is good as well, the chicken wings as an appetizer are great. Some people love wabash in the northland, it's ok. Go to okie joes.
